I just recently finished a series on netlfix about post apocalyptic earth after a global nuclear war and radiation still soaking Earth and it got me thinking about nukes.

I understand that they hold a shite ton of value as deterrents as a means of keeping the peace on the global scale and is also a very good tool of bringing bloody wars to a very swift and decisive end like we did with Japan.

But the fact is that as long as nuclear weapons exist, they still hold the ability to completely destroy humanity as we know it or at least completely destroy the modern industrialized human race and send us back to the stone ages to a point where it would take us thousands of years to get back to where we are today.

it doesn't take much for that to happen whether it be rogue criminal actors stealing nukes, an out of control government on the war path, or some glitchy computer program that we can't stop in time.

No. It's not even sporting when you can just push a button and destroy the world.

When we invented nuclear weapons, we literally stole power that was exclusively reserved for God himself.

I don't think any nation will use nukes. The destruction would just be too catastrophic and impossible to take back. So in that respect, I'm not worried. What does worry me is a nutcase or ISIS or a group like them will get there hands on a nuke and manage to set it off somewhere.

Not at all. The idea of one of these actually being used scares the crap out of me

I believe that tesla's death ray should have won over Einstein's atomic bomb.

We are now making tesla's ray. If it would have won. All nations would have them. Would make bombs ineffective and would have brought about peace.

America is now building a defense system, that eventually will become long range enough to be an offensive system. This is what the future holds. It will be different as most of the world was in an agreement for no defense systems, so we will be the lone owner of such a system.

I love the positive things that can be done with nuclear technology and hate the negatives.

No, feel it's too much power for a small percentage of the world to have.

However I'm stoked we have them

The father in me says yes, I'm very glad they exist because they keep great powers from going to total war against each other.

The historian in me laments that WW2 will be the last real go at it.

The 100 on CW.

Say what you will about the characters and plot development on the series but the current state of humanity and Earth on the show is about as low as it gets as they are literally just trying to not go extinct and has resorted to caveman like behavior trying to survive.

They have no hope whatsoever of rebuilding Earth and society back to where it was before the nukes fell at least for several thousand years and it's just a depressing thought to think though.

It really makes you understand the fact that nuclear weapons are not a joking matter and the emotional outbursts of nuking the mideast every time a terrorist attack happens is just stupid and dangerous.

Nukes are awesome. My days are so much more exciting knowing that a random person can set off the biggest fireworks show the world has ever seen with the push of a button.

Why?

You should hope that they will never ever be used again. These things represent the death of modern and advanced industrialized humanity and a one way ticket back to the stone ages if we ever used them again.

A nuke is just a really big bomb. Nothing more.

Great tools for combating Global Warming.

If things get too bad we can set off all of them and create a nuclear winter.
