And what police state has existed that wasn't obviously a police state?

I'm not talking about defining them as a police state. I'm talking about tactics.

what do you mean by police state.

When you fear the police/government more than you fear criminals.

Or put another way...

In my entire life, I have never, ever thought to be afraid of my government. I am now in the process of re-thinking that matter.

it's the locals who will toss you in jail.

Chose one. From East Germany and the Stasi to the old Soviet Union to Pinochet in Chile. All used clandestine tactics to reach their goals of control through fear.

In E Germany everyone was well aware of the existence of the police state, Stassi and the fact that you couldn't trust anyone....yes, it was clandestine, but no one had any doubts about the state of their existence.

N. Korea is very open about its policies.

But that was never the point of my post. Knowledge of the state's existence, notwithstanding, they operate in secrecy.

Agree, but I think this is more of a new concept.

The 1984 idea of forcing servitude and control doesn't work.

The Brave New World idea of creating an environment that allows citizens to love their servitude and remain blind to the control is much more ideal.

You believe the average North Korean is kept abreast of their government's policies? I think the North Korean people have discerned through experience not to trust their government but that is not the same as being aware of stated, but more importantly, unstated policies.

History reveals police states are usually clandestine. We're becoming the exception to that rule.

What do you mean by this? How is what is occurring here different from E Germany aside from scale and the fact the E Germany was the very definition of a police state while here we can argue that there are some vestiges appearing but still a long way from a police state.

To a degree it was a subtle but anguished attempt to imply that Washington no longer attempts to sugar coat legislation that diminishes long defined and long enjoyed freedoms among the country's citizenry.

Why would anyone want to go to war with the police. Police don't write laws the legislature does. Attacking cops because of your disappointment with government is like attacking the meter reader because you are dissatisfied with your electrical bill.
