He wasn’t the first European to touch American soil

He didn’t murder or take anything of note (Pizzaro and Cortez the Spaniards did all of that)

He just “found” Hispaniola. That’s it.

Not his fault the people there traded it all away in 300 years for beads and slaves.

He started the slave trade. He set up the first plantations, enslaving the local natives to work on them until they died and needed to be replaced by African slaves, in the new world to grow tobacco to export to Europe (also got the European royalty hooked on Tobacco).

All of this outrage is feigned. It isn't real. The names of statues, monuments, street names and holidays have nothing to do with how one lives his or her life. I cannot for the life of me understand how progressives wake up and give a shite about any of this. Their authoritarian impulse to reshape society by force, guilt or manipulated outrage is dangerous.

Yeah, this isn't true. Columbus did bring some nativs back to Spain as slaves, but Spain was already using Africans as slaves.

Man, you libs really like to bend the truth.

Actually the Muslims were using Africans as slaves for a thousand years before Columbus.

Most of Mexico’s art and architecture celebrates Cortez which is ironic.

It's not that ironic. The Mexican ruling class is very European.

How could he have started the slave trade. Slavery has been since the beginning of civilization and is still real in some areas of the globe.

He imported slaves to the new world for the first time, i.e. started the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Also, not a lib, not in favor of removing Columbus from anything, but I understand the arguments progressives use to purge these extremely important political figures from our history.
