why should he, just because you were in the service doesn't mean the president should be at your funeral

For the same reason he awards medals, visits the wounded, and visits the troops.
Just because you're a punk black kid who charged a cop and ended up dead doesn't mean the president should send officials to your funeral, yet that happened.

I didn't even know this was a thing. I did over 150 funerals including 14 active duty funerals when I was on honor guard and I can count on no hands how many times the president showed up.

Obviously he can't be expected to go to them all, even if we wish they were so few that did make sense. The man was the deadliest sniper in American history, you go to the funeral. There's plenty to say about W and I hope this doesn't turn into that, but I fully believe he would have gone. Heck, Bill would have gone IMO. You would think most presidents would go to that funeral.

Tough call, IMO. I mean, the other guys died in combat so I'm not sure who fits where on the "deserves a visit" hierarchy.

I agree that's a delimma. Personally I believe they all deserve it, it's just not feasible. I'd imagine if there's any humanity and respect for ones country left in any of these people, this kind of thing would be one of the heaviest weights they carry.

yea i don't get the outrage over the president - trump, obama, whomever - personally making a call/writing a letter or not. two of my uncles were killed in combat and both grandpa's died of natural causes but served in wwii. all received a flag and form letter from the president. nobody complained or expected more.
this is a pretty meh outrage issue. i do think it was in extremely poor taste for trump to drag kelly into this. seems like it's widely known that he made a conscious effort to keep his grief over his son's death private
