Appears they are try to make Jackson another version of Atlanta. Expect to see 100% voter turnout in Jackson in the next governor’s election. Received a GA-style spam text a bit about opposing the racist bills that would put oversight over the handling of Jackson’s water and expand the territory of the capitol police.

Now appears Lumumba is going full speed ahead.

‘Plantation politics’: Mayor critical of bill taking over Jackson water, sewer systems

quote:

Lumumba called out state leaders for the bill, comparing the state to “a colonial power taking over our city.” “It’s plantation politics. Every time there is mention of the city of Jackson, there is some parental force that they believe is supposed to be some overseer of the city of Jackson,” he said. “It is absurd. It is racist. It is all of those things.”

Not gonna work. Not enough people in Jackson and it’s just bleeding more population every year.

Jackson is one of the most dysfunctional city administrations in the South. It is 100% a race issue….just not the way he sees it. There is a reason why the State Legislature is having to take action.

How is it that your Governor is hamstrung? He couldn’t step in?

Jackson will never be like Atlanta. Atlanta has jobs, jobs, jobs...and ones that pay really well too. Jackson has...well, it's Jackson. As the previous poster said, it's bleeding population. Folks leaving are the ones with options. The ones staying are parasites.

My kid is getting lots of stuff in the mail about college. He gets something in the mail from Belhaven University (it's in Jackson). It says basically "hey, kids, good news, the water is turned back on and it seems like it shouldn't happen again!" I mean, seriously, when your city's universities have to mention how the water is back on as a selling point then you know your city is one step from the grave.

The difference is Atlanta has been getting a huge influx of out of state liberals

Jackson has like 170k people and is steady bleeding population. Not enough to flip MS. Not even close

This is a state election year. The Democrat running against the current governor is a JBE-style moderate from the northeast part of the state (the most moderate area of the state). He was a popular small town mayor who ran for Public Service Commission. He's been a key figure in getting broadband internet to rural Mississippians, so he is well liked. He also is Elvis' cousin and shares his last name.

Here is his campaign announcement ad: LINK

Tate Reeves is not the most popular Republican in MS. He won a tight GOP Primary last time. No one is primarying him, but there's a poll that only 35% of Mississippians want him to be re-elected.

Entering into the Jackson situation is tough. Jackson has the largest population in the state and as you can imagine, it's heavily Democrat. Jackson is a non-issue because they typically have a sub 20% turnout.

You’re always great with MS knowledge so appreciate your response

I’m sure the Jackson water situation nor out of control crime isn’t boding well for Tate.

nor Is the Brett Favre welfare scam or the medical marijuana reversal and re-pass. There's a ton of people pissed about that. Add in a 100k or so that are pissed about the state flag and you have a recipe for an upset

We are in incredible financial shape though. That will be what he touts.

I'm sorry. It had to go to runoff and it wasn't terribly tight once you got the DeSoto County guy out.

Reeves is going to win re-election, but there will be polls that have Presley beating him.

How are either the water situation or crime situation Tate’s responsibility? The OP mentions what happens when another entity tries to take over for the Jackson mayor.

The local government of the state Capital is letting their infrastructure crumble unnecessarily. This is the exact reason for a state government. When the primary source of government has begun to largely fail.

Democrats will blame and cry racism regardless, so no matter what the circumstance they will twist the narrative to fit their purpose.

But that’s their whole identity. The MS GOP, known as the Dixiecrats circa 1960, isn’t driven by ideology, or even racism anymore. It’s just a social network that vets people on their way up, chooses favorites, and pushes them into power. There is almost never any viable opposition; there is only the family. It’s a special and very southern way of governing, and it’s guiding philosophy, to the extent it has one, is pragmatism. It’s hit and miss, like any model, and I think Tate is a competent man.
