Not in name

I am not saying that they have zero military, I was just not describing their self defense entity as a "military".

On another note, we definitely should allow them to build their military again.

Would be a wise move because it would allow Japan to be more of a counter balance to China in the region

There was a story on Vice about this a little while back. Apparently, there's a growing movement in Japan to do that.

South Korea has a far more powerful military than Japan.

I know Japan used to have a bad arse military but I don't know anymore. I honestly think their military would surprise us.

Absolutely, the US just needs to start sending the shipments and in less than 6 months Japan could lay the smack down on Kim Jong Idiot.

We've got claymores now so I'm ok with them building an army

South Korea has a large military though. Their army is actually larger than ours.

I think there has to be enough rational people in the North Korean government/military who see Kim for the rash, self-serving lunatic he is. There has to be enough sane, knowledgeable people in that country that can grasp just how backwards their country is, and how the Kim reign of power has prevented any type of progress.

I think the smart play is to somehow get these people to overthrow Kim before the missiles start flying.

Japan would get BTFO. FFS people do some research on why they can't have a huge military. (it has something to do with ww2)

South Korea and Japan, without USA aid would get wiped out by North Korea. Seoul would be destroyed in 10 minutes, with millions dead.

I doubt that. The South Korean military is no joke and is far better equipped.

Japanese companies own a shite ton of technology patents they have not allowed to be licensed for military applications. With the change to their constitution, those of us who work in space and missile defense are seeing new opportunities to use these technologies in ways that will greatly enhance defensive capabilities and threat assessment. We're looking at new technologies, for example, that allow items as small as 6mm to be examined on an airstrip in the dark, in color, by both ground and air measures, specifically UAV systems, and being able to detect small unexploded ordinance in a live fire zone from 15,000 feet and feed it back live in 3D to pink assets on the ground through the optics sensors in their helmets. These new capabilities all rely on Japanese patents that weren't available until just recently and everyone is scrambling to militarize these. Technology to allow a pilot, in only starlight, to see everything around him in color and looking close to daylight scenes is being tested now for integration into air defense wingframe and rotary systems within the next 3 - 5 years. It's really amazing to see.
