Common Core - English Curriculum

Thoughts on this from an English class curriculum?
LINK

quote:

Teaching materials aligned with the controversial national educational standards ask fifth-graders to edit such sentences as “(The president) makes sure the laws of the country are fair,” “The wants of an individual are less important than the well-being of the nation” and “the commands of government officials must be obeyed by all."

Criticism of the curriculum...
quote:

But if the lessons are meant as a primer on the Constitution, there's another problem, note critics. The job of making sure laws are fair is not the president's, but the judicial branch's. The executive branch's duty is to administer laws. And the example that places the well-being of the nation above the "wants of an individual" appears to run counter to the basic principles of the Bill of Rights.

Apparently these specific references will be taken out...
quote:

This particular lesson will be edited, a Pearson spokesperson told Fox News—but just how many other lessons pushing political ideologies are out there?

re: Common Core - English Curriculum
It is apparently Common Core approved curriculum produced by Pearson Education. Maybe the teacher selected to use it, IDK.

So Dr. King was wrong to challenge the Jim Crow laws? Those were commands of government officials.

I actually had to go to the original Fox News article to see why this was such an issue. The quoted text said the students needed to edit the sentences to correct them. This can be a bit misleading as the actual editing required by the exercise isn't changing "The President" to "The US Supreme Court" but rather replacing underlined words with possessive nouns. So instead of "he [the President] makes sure the laws of the country are fair" they wanted "he [the President] makes sure the country's laws are fair".

In either form, this is dangerously ignorant to be coming from an educational cirriculum. I'm glad people were shocked and angry enough to throw a fit about it.

No, it's just another example of how ignorant our society is becoming. Whether this was the teacher or from the education service, someone showed a mind-numbing level of ignorance in creating and/or approving this.

Rarely does a bureacracy move with swift action without being beaten with the whip of public outcry. Let the black heli's have a field day on it, as long as it gets it corrected. Statements like yours do nothing but infer that you think it's not a big deal.

Common Core is dog shite wrapped in bacon. The outside presentation focuses on critical thinking skills and analysis which should be the focus of education. However, underneath the superficial lies indoctrination and forced conformity.

re: Common Core - English Curriculum
The reality much less the design of this soon to be the law is beyond stupid. A handful of people smaller than most nation wide school boards are making educational policy of the entire nation. That policy will establish what is in every textbook and the teachers daily plan in every classroom. The cultural norms that are in classrooms are at present fricked up with establishing what is acceptable. The GLBT crowd is happy with teaching second graders that they are not bogeymen and women. Teaching to the test become the whole parameters of what should be achieved by teachers, textbooks with half truths and lies such as quoted do not present a problem as molding of young minds is the goal, and a lie is too often easier to use.

Yea I realized that and added the Fox link in my second post. I apologize for the confusion. I'll add it to the first post too.

As my dad says, whenever Obama, Jindal, and John White are all on the same page with it, there's something wrong with it.

re: Common Core - English Curriculum
I saw a TV show this week [not Fox] that showed where 40% of a section was ver batum language right out of Lennin's writings of Russian Communists need to follow what the Gov't tells you to do. Communist Lennin 1920 writings for Americans to follow. Who is going to stop this stuff? If you try, you are crazy or a racist Tea Party follower. Under Obama, Patriotism and correct History is on the outs. Who is going to stop this?
