I am sorry but that is a terrible article.

Let me summarize:

"YOU think that the Middle East is SIMPLE, but it's NOT! There is all this HISTORIC CONTEXT you either don't know or forgot! Military action just isn't going to CUT IT!"

Well duh. Other than the most simple minded, low-information type, who thinks the Middle East is a simple issue? It is one of, if not the, most intractable conflicts of our time.

And for a guy that talks a lot about context he leaves out the whole Israel-Palestine issue. As if that didn't even exist.

And most importantly, his "solution" is to "think differently." Well, that's helpful.

Sorry, but it read like a sophomore who just discovered existentialism: "the world really ISN'T as simple as you uninformed masses think!!"

Well researched, but ultimately not particularly interesting to anyone who has spent any amount of time looking at these issue. Maybe a good intro primer, but that's about it.

First thing I learned is that there is no such thing as an intelligence success. There are only operational and policy successes. And there are only intelligence failures.

You sound like an infantry officer, baw. (That's not a good thing.)

Well to be fair, I was saying that ironically.

I got that - what you said was exactly how we used to say in MI.

I think that the Shah was just another of the Dictators we - and the civilized World - supported to keep Islam down.

I disagree, the Shah was our attempt to keep socialism down in the region - Radical Islam is a reaction to our interference in their internal affairs.

The CIA overthrew the democratically elected Mosaddegh when he started asking Great Britain about how they were nationalizing their coal fields, as he wanted to do it with Iran's oil fields.

The problem was, British Petroleum (BP) owned their oil rights, so Great Britain had no interest in Iran's socialization, so they approached Eisenhower who got the CIA to instigate a coup - and thus install the Shah.

As much talk about self-government and democracy as we talk, when we don't like it, we overthrow it. That's the kind of hypocrisy that people remember about us in that region. We don't even remember it ourselves, but they sure do.

That led to asymmetrical warfare between ME countries and the US. Radical Islam is a part of their asymmetrical strategy.

Ha. I'm confused. I always thought you were infantry (and a damned lawyer to boot). Which makes sense from your earlier post.

Never knew you transitioned to MI.

FF

If I had my way every asset we have in that region would be home tonight...people. Let them have our stuff so they can kill off each other. Place is a cesspool that should have no standing of count in how we do foreign affairs. We have had and currently have skin in the game in that region and without question the matter which disturbs our peace the most.

British intelligence and other Iranian factions were involved as much or more as the CIA, who always gets every bit of the blame here.

More like green folks. I could have sworn you were a 27A while Ace was a licensed attorney who chose to go (or stay) with the infantry. Tricky Army bastards.

Ace is an MI series guy with a law degree, don't think he went down the 27a hole.

I was 11b then transitioned to 27a, civilian lawyer.
