One of the world's leading experts has resigned among climate change "craziness"

Let me preface this post with this before people go off on a tangent: Dr. Curry does not deny the reality of AGW. She acknowledges the fact that the Earth is warming at an accelerated rate and this is caused at least in part by man's influence:

quote:

Curry actually believes, along with the vast majority of climate scientists, that humans are warming the planet, and was even an outspoken advocate of the issue during the George W. Bush years. She was among the first to connect global warming to hurricanes, for example, publishing an influential study in Science in 2006. But where she breaks with the majority opinion is over just how much humans are actually causing global temperatures to rise.

She has however been a dissenter on the topic of HOW IMMINENT the threat is, the RELATIVE DEGREE of human influence and HOW MUCH we could effect real change without collapsing modern society altogether, which is really what the debate SHOULD be about:

quote:

Where many scientists say that humans are the primary cause of warming, Curry believes natural forces play a larger role. She also believes that uncertainty around climate models means we don't have to act so quickly and that current plans would do little to mitigate warming.

quote:

In announcing her retirement, Curry wrote about what she called her "growing disenchantment with universities, the academic field of climate science and scientists." She said a deciding factor for leaving the ivory tower was that "I no longer know what to say to students and postdocs regarding how to navigate the CRAZINESS in the field of climate science," adding that research and funding for it are highly politicized.

The moral of this post is that too many people get caught up in and dig in their heels over the topic of AWG existing. This bogs down discussion and gives the alarmists an easy out by simply mocking views which are impossible to soundly defend.

The direction of objective needs to be shifted to the sustainable and supported position that, while AGW is real, the state of imminent danger has been inflated and the relative impact we have is not as great as is being portrayed.

The crazies are discrediting the entire field. Science isn't supposed to be ideological or intolerant of dissent.

The thing is, she wasn't "discredited". Her work is widely respected and GT is sad to see her go.

That's why this is important. She's not some fringe lunatic and has the ear of the mainstream climate change movers and shakers.

Still bringing climate change to a forum that thinks Russian malevolence is controversial, eh?

Good luck.

Many MANY academics feel as she does behind closed doors.

This is very true. I have patent applications pending, and my dissertation was on novel solvents for CO2 separations, and my advisor and I made no direct reference to climate change, because it's just not that big of a problem. We did mention government regulations and other advantages of CO2 separations like natural gas sweetening.

It's one of those things that politicians love to fund, and scientists need a source of funding. Although scientists like to talk about the dangers of "pop science," it's the way the game has been played since the Renaissance.

Little by little

Just as the alarmists need to be slowly brought back to reality, so too the AGW deniers must be educated and made to understand the true crux of the issue.

Which is unfortunate, because it gives those without formal science educations what they see as valid reasoning for distrusting any area of science they see fit because "it's corrupt"

No, this board has been denying AGW exists altogether

When/if the AGW crowd stops manipulating their data to get their desired results, we may be more inclined to believe them.

Until then, no.
