Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas signaled his willingness on Monday to undo a 1964 ruling that makes it difficult to sue media outlets for libel.

The conservative justice, who was one of five votes to overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade on Friday, issued a dissenting opinion after the high court refused to hear a case brought by a Christian group that sued the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Coral Ridge Ministries Media filed suit against the SPLC, a left-leaning watchdog, after it labeled the Christian organization a hate group.

The lawsuit sought to upend the precedent established by New York Times v. Sullivan, the 1964 court case which set a high bar for public officials to sue for defamation.

“I would grant certiorari in this case to revisit the ‘actual malice’ standard,” Thomas wrote in his dissent.

“This case is one of many showing how New York Times and its progeny have allowed media organizations and interest groups ‘to cast false aspersions on public figures with near impunity.'”

Thomas wrote: “SPLC’s ‘hate group’ designation lumped Coral Ridge’s Christian ministry with groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Neo-Nazis.”

“It placed Coral Ridge on an interactive, online ‘Hate Map’ and caused Coral Ridge concrete financial injury by excluding it from the AmazonSmile donation program.”

The justice continued: “Nonetheless, unable to satisfy the ‘almost impossible’ actual-malice standard this Court has imposed, Coral Ridge could not hold SPLC to account for what it maintains is a blatant falsehood.”

Another conservative justice, Neil Gorsuch, concurred with Thomas’ view that New York Times v. Sullivan should be revisited.

I watched a documentary on Clarence Thomas this weekend.
He has real hate in his heart for the media and how they go after people. Because they did it to him.

I'm talking real HATE.

Yea they were ruthless towards him and drug up the false claims of Anita Hill and did the same to Kavanaugh decades later. Nothing has changed.

MSM is the number 1 most corrupt organization in America society.

Why Republicans do not attack them at every chance just goes to show you how stupid they are or they are ok with propaganda.

Trump was the most vocal critic of the MSM and this why they are trying to take him down.

For a judge who had not asked a question in the many years he has been on the court until recently, is on fire.

THIS is the Achilles heel of America - our interpretation of media immunity from libel/slander restrictions.

AT LEAST - if a media discloses something that is later found to be false - they MUST reveal their source for that information and seek charges against him - PLUS the media itself must be held accountable to some "due diligence" requirement whereby THEY must prove that they did everything 'reasonably' possible to discover the TRUTH before they published the libel/slander - and be held accountable for their deficiencies by huge monetary fines and loss of publishing privileges.

The rein of the NYT controlling the political narrative in this nation for the past 100 years has driven us almost to the point of extinction.

It’s like he’s been saving his ammo for the appropriate time. He is getting towards the end of his career, and he sees the opportunity. For such a time as this …

The splc is a garbage organization at this point and they were successfully sued by masjid nawaz when they labeled him as anti-Muslim.

I’d be extremely leery of any weakening of libel laws…remember that this will cut in both directions…gateway, breitbart, townhall etc.

They are just playing stupid. If the media isn't attacking them then they can't play the victim. It's all by design.

precisely - he stood up and said "no more" - and this is what they did to him.

The 'big steal' could not have happened without the wholehearted active compliance by the NYT/WaPo/ABC/CBS/NBC cabal

That is fine by me - I want more restraint in publishing garbage -

either that - OR

As a citizen we should want any (left or right) media reporting to be factual and something you can place confidence in. Instead, today it is all reported as factual when, in reality, a large amount of it is opinion or intended to support an organizations politics or agenda.

You can lean right or left as an organization, but still report facts.

Remember when the Washington Post had “listened to the tape” of the conversation between Trump and Raffensperger? And they put quote marks around things that the blonde whore Jordan told them that Trump said in that conversation? And then it turns out that they had not listened to a tape of the conversation? And they just lied? And Jordan the whore had lied? And people still believe that lie even now, 18 months later?

I remember.
