The Russo Ukrainian war has been eye opening to how easily expensive tech can be neutralized with low level quadcopter drones.

Unmanned fighters are the future

Throw away small drones and lots of them can take out a plane

The F-35 could destroy a squadron of f-16s before the F-16s even know it is there. The force multiplier is immense.
Even if the F-16 gets in a dogfight, the helmet display for the F-35 allows for targeting off bore shots.
When the f-35 was first reported to lose dogfights against the viper, that article failed to mention that the f-35 used wasn’t a production model, didn’t have the radar absorbing materials installed, and didn’t have the see-through fuselage capabilities production run lightnings do. When the lightning first went into a red flag exercises, they amassed 20+ to 1 kill ratios vs America’s 4th gen jets.
The lightning is a different aircraft. It can’t turn inside the viper because that isn’t what it’s designed to do. It is a mission integrator that has teeth.
I love the F-16, but the lightning is on another level of technology. That is why we are exporting it to our friends that can afford it.
Speaking of low cost, go look at what Air Tractor did with a new close air support aircraft. That little thing is cheap and simple to operate that has good reviews so far from the field.

There are already gen 6 prototypes, I imagine the cost on those will be unreal.
Not if you take the pilot out of the cockpit.
That's the answer to this question btw. If you don't have to keep a pilot alive, suddenly you're able to do things no other plane can. For cheaper than if you had to support that pilot.

The new F15EX is ballooning to over $100M a plane
And we could buy 600 of them for what we just send to Ukraine.
I don't want to hear a fricking word from anyone about not being able to afford actual American defense needs.

F35A cost per plane continues to come down to around $85M. The new F15EX is ballooning to over $100M a plane, which is surprising for an updated 1970s fourth generation jet
The Feds are buying F-35s from Costco basically. Huge bath so much cheaper. The F-15EX is very small batch so less airframes to spread the R&D costs to.
I’m still blown away that Boeing was chosen for the T-X program when Lockheed Martin had the T-50A ready to go.

The B-21 will be a billion apiece. Count on it. The F-22 replacement will be closer to $500 million apiece than $300.
Every single new weapons system far exceeds its projected cost.

The Me 162 Volksjager was a low cost design using plywood.

Yes, but defense contractors and the DOD aren't interested in value.

Instead of fighter jets, it’s better to invest in hypersonic missiles/drones and defense of such weapons. That’s the future of warfare.

Saw that and started laughing. Wife asked “What’s so funny?”
“ I had a contract for transportable distribution transformers with the Army. Set them in place, when the camp moved they blew them up. $28:000 a pop first purchase. Second PO, $50,000. Third PO $80,000.
Read the stupidity of the military Requisition…..my transformers were not more than $28,000 and We were not padding any Congressman’s pocket.
I liked those $150,000 PO’s
Finally the contract cancelled. They bought materials on hand as well.

You must not have seen that the video the other day where the Air Force has been paying $90,000 for a small bag of rubber bushings.
