La Times - Cal Pubs ask Trump to stop funding bullet train

quote:

California’s House Republicans have asked the Trump administration to block a pending federal grant that will ultimately support the state’s high speed rail project until an audit of the project’s finances is completed.

The letter, signed by all 14 members of the state’s GOP delegation, including House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, was sent to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. It cites cost increases, reductions in the project’s scope and its failure to attract private financing.

As a CA lib, this is a great idea.

That project reads like a DoD acquisition. Perhaps they should take a break and reassess it's viability if the projected costs have already doubled and the thing is barely off the ground.

Quick note. This is being funded primarily by state money and investors. They could theoretically proceed without federal support.

Absolutely.

Of course they could run into trouble if the tracks should need to cross Federal lands.

Agreed. But this just the kind of infrastructure investment Trump's been trumpeting. And a bullet train from San Dog to Sacramento sounds pretty awesome.

This was always a Governor Brown boondoggle.

Such a stupid idea. No one is going to use that thing.

I'm all for that money being redirected into water production and storage infrastructure, roads, bridges, and energy r and d subsidies.

Eh. I hate public transportation and rarely use it, but improving its infrastructure is sorely needed in this country. I think a bullet train for SOCAL to Sacramento sounds like a pretty good idea.

If private investors are still covering the bulk of it and insulating taxpayers from the cost overruns.....I don't see why the Feds should pull back.

They have to get costs under control.

Lucky bastards. My region just approved a $50 billion light rail package that's being paid for by 3 million people.

This actually is a half-decent fit into Trump's plan to push public/private investment partnership.

Gov "Moon Beam" can suck it! Japan has had a bullet train for years. If California was serious about this ,this would have been done years ago as a necessity. Now it's brought up as an after thought and that's when money disappears. $64 B. my arse.

Then there's no problem for President Trump to defund this.

If the money is there without federal funding, then it should be able to pay its own way.

Time to make California start spending their own money.

Trust me. It's a bad idea.

Who the frick wants to go to Sacramento?

I'll drive to SF, it's an amazing trip.

The culture here isn't geared towards public transportation. Now, a MAGLEV on the East coast would be legit. Those folks are all in on the train stuff.

We prefer our cars and aircraft.

Southwest has 9 flight a day from SD to SAC, what's that, 120 heads a pop?

So you have 9 chances to get there at different times (and that is just nonstop)

Instead, let's get 300-400 people to go on a train at the same time, and pay $64B before the first pax - brilliant!

FIFY

BTW, I agree with the other posters who think this is a big waste of money.
