This reminds me of a “Decoded” video I watched on Facebook today. .
The black host referred to The Canterbury Tales as The Cadbury Tales.

I bet she has a degree in *something*.

That study just says that black women are more educated than black men by a larger margin than any other gender relative to their race.

That's what I took from this part:
quote:

Between 2009 and 2010, black women earned 68 per cent of associate's degrees, 66 per cent of bachelor's degrees, 71 per cent of master's degrees and 65 per cent of all doctorate degrees awarded to black students

As a percentage of their population, black women have a very high college and post-graduate enrollment. That certainly doesn't necessarily equate to being intelligent or even educated, but thats likely what people who claimed they are the most educated are referring to.

Indeed.

The reality is that even though they have higher #s enrolled and graduate, they tend to have the lowest $ rates amoung all races. Even compared to men of their own race.

Education as the media defines it is not a definition of better SES. It hasn't been the only indicator for a LONG time.

On this very board you see people claim they make around 6 figures with an AS in process technology. Degree type means more than anything. Connections matter more so.

Don't let the facts from the National Center for Education hit you in the face.

That article really botched the interpretation of statistics.

Just look at this quote:
quote:

The percentage of black students attending college has increased from 10 per cent to 15 per cent from 1976 to 2012, while the percentage of white students fell from 84 to 60 per cent.
So if 15% of black students are attending college, and 60% of white students are attending college, then even if 100% of the Black students are women (roughly 30% attendance rate), and then its mathematically impossible to have a rate anything more than half the rate of white students since anything other than 50/50 would give a group a share greater than 60%.

This is simple math. That should never have been published in a major news outlet.

The problem is that the data indicate that blacks still have low college attendance ratings across the board, it’s just that black males are significantly worse than black females and it’s a troubling statistic for black males.

I just can’t believe a major news organization would so grossly misinterpret that data and not a single person catch that before putting it to print and not even correct it to this day.

Yeah the math is bad, but that sensationalized headline is worse.

Yeah. Granted I’m a poor writer, so there is a good chance I’m wrong, but the caption below the picture seems to be grammatically questionable as well:
quote:

A higher percentage of black women is enrolled in college than any other racial or gender group.
I guess “black women” could be considered a singular group, but women followed by is just doesn’t sound right.

I agree that Black males on average achieve higher education at a much lower rate than Black women.

I'm sure crime and lack of interest play a role. However there are a few factors some poster touched on

1. How many of these degrees have value in the marketplace? Black male earners on average make more than their female counterparts DESPITE the education difference.

2. Black males may choose occupations that don't require the same education level or little required. I know black truck drivers who only have a CDL making decent living.

3. Higher incarceration (reasons aside) means that there is a LOWER % of AVAILABLE BLACK MALES relative to the total population in the workforce. This isn't to demean their accomplishments or shift blame. The statistic is misleading in more ways than one.

According to this link, black students make up 15% of the college population, but a subgroup (black women) of that total group earns the majority of the degrees?
