I am of the opinion that more logical people would be agnostic rather than atheist.

Agnostics more or less realize it's a futile argument and do not bother wasting time on the matter, while atheists often use their non belief as a morbid ice breaker as well as a crutch among their social circles.

And this is of course in my opinion from experiences of my own.

I consider myself agnostic, but in threads like this, for simplicity sake, I just go with atheist.

I'm atheist and stay absolutely silent about it.
However my Facebook feed saturated daily with religious posts. Share if you love Jesus type stuff.

And even the term "evangelical" has been highjacked by rabid dogmatic radicals. It initially meant a proclamation of freedom from the hopelessness of works righteousness. Now I'm not sure what it means.

I used to say i was agnostic but i came to recognize that in terms of God, there really are only two states. Belief and non belief

I realize this goes against what many think but to me, agnostic is a word that is primarily used a an out.

Kind of a "hey, i never said he DIDN'T exist" card if it becomes necessary.

But. Somehow, I'm thinking that if God exists and he demands belief, he's not going to accept the "i only sort of disbelieved" line

I hear this a lot but I don't think there's anything wrong with admitting you don't truly know.

Evangelicals are more of a political group than a religious one. At least over the last 20 years.

Progressivism is the left's new religion.

They are against free speech, against freedom of (other) religions, and against feedom to own firearms.

I'd also like to point out that what is often portrayed as a dual argument isn't.

It isn't just does God exist or not.

Its does God of the Bible exist

Does ANY God exist that pays attention to us?

Does a God exist who created us and drove on leaving us behind?

Is there no God but instead, ridiculously advanced beings in our universe who created us who themselves were created by ridiculously advanced beings..... perhaps not of this universe?

Is there a God who was fully capable of creating our universe from scratch and paying attention to us who himself was created by a higher God?

I could go on.

Half the problem is we view everything on human scale. We can't help that of course. But, it causes us to think big to us = big and small to us = small.

But the universe might be small in a grander scheme of things. Or. Maybe there are actually universes on scales that would seem invisible to us?

We have literally no way of knowing

Oh. And if we live in a simulated universe as has been theorized, wouldn't the creator of the simulation sort of be "God" to us?

Now, some of you have an unhealthy need to get atheists in the club. Most atheists don't particularly care if you join their club. For the most part, I'd say the same.

I do think we'd see a considerable improvement in our society with the reduction of religious beliefs in otherwise intelligent and reasonable people.

Right. I agree with that.

What stuck out to me in your prior post was:
quote:

But. Somehow, I'm thinking that if God exists and he demands belief, he's not going to accept the "i only sort of disbelieved" line

The problem with that is it presupposes that I'm hedging to backdoor my way into salvation. I'm hedging because I'm not confident enough in my understanding of the universe to definitively declare that there isn't a creator. Nothing more.

oh I'm not really directing it specifically at you. I realize that most people like to use the standard use of agnostic. I just don't find it useful given the myriad examples I gave of how some kind of creator could exist.

I mean let's say you believed in a god that created the universe but then said frick it and went on to create 50 more while ignoring us. Which word would you use? I mean I suppose you could say you are a theist but most theist think the Creator is at least paying attention.

And that's the other reason why I only use atheist instead of agnostic. In terms of discussion we really usually are only talking about do you believe in the god of the Bible or not? Abrahams God which of course includes Islam and Judaism. I mean I don't think your typical Muslim Jew or Christian would use the word agnostic or even theist if you said you believed in Apollo.

So really it sounds like you and I are very similar. I just find no use for the word agnostic because the reality is neither the religious nor the non-religious have concrete proof so everything falls into the doubt category

If you don't stand with trump and Jesus, you stand for the liberals and their devil worship

If you're an atheist reading this, it's time to make a serious decision to take off the fedora and put on a halo

In my own case I would not be using it as an "out" for the off chance that it saves my soul. No I consider myself agnostic because I really just don't give a shite about something that cannot be proven one way or another.

If god exists it will likely be in a form entirely foreign to any of our current beliefs/notions with completely different intentions. IMO of course.
