It's all happening, folks. MAGA!!!!

The U.S.-drafted constitution’s Article 9, if taken literally, bans the maintenance of armed forces. But Japanese governments have interpreted it to allow a military exclusively for self-defense.

Backers of Abe’s proposal to clarify the military’s ambiguous status say it would codify the status quo. Critics fear it would allow an expanded role overseas for the military.

Abe said he would not stick to a target he had floated of making the changes by 2020. “First, I want to deepen debate and have as many people as possible agree,” he told a TV broadcaster. “We should put priority on that.”

...

Amendments must be approved by two-thirds of each chamber of parliament and then by a majority in a public referendum.

“Now that pro-constitutional change parties occupy more than two-thirds of the parliament, the constitution will be the most important political issue next year,” said Hidenori Suezawa, a financial market and fiscal analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities.

”And as we saw in the U.K. ..., a referendum could be tricky. So while Abe is likely to be prime minister for the time being, it is too early to say whether he can stay in power until 2021.” Abe declined to say if he’d run for a third term.

Abe had said he needed a new mandate to tackle a "national crisis" from North Korea's missile and nuclear threats and a fast-aging population, and to approve his idea of diverting revenue from a planned sales tax hike to education and child care from public debt repayment.

The Japs need to pay for more of their own defense, folks. They have to do it. GO TRUMP!

This has been in the works ever since 2014, and coincided with Japan promising 200 million to fight terrorist groups in the ME. Here is a good article about the passage of bills in 2015 which expanded the SDF's possible role in future conflicts. LINK

This has been a long time coming, and with threats in Korea and the South China Sea, I'd imagine that other SE Asian countries will watch what Japan does very closely.

The US debt is not going down and the defense lobby is winning under Trump.

Defense spending needs to be curtailed.

It's expected, but still a positive development. Changes to article 9 of Japan's constitution have been bandied about for years, and really picked up steam in 2011-2012. It's been a cornerstone of Abe's ambitions for years. Hope it comes to fruition, but a lot of what happens up front will be largely symbolic.

This is a good thing. The Japanese need to be responsible for their own security. Relying on others is unhealthy, and leads to bad decisions. They should have to make he hard choices for themselves.

Banzai just means "Yeah !" "Hurrah!" etc. in Japanese. We did it at all our company meetings when I worked in Japan. Even the Westerners. It's not exclusive to war or Japanese zero pilots etc.

Interesting. I always thought it was plea/prayer to gods for eternal life. Similar in form to Muslims' "allahu akbar" . . . God is great.

It depends on the setting . In a business meeting it means “ Hurrah” , and to a soldier it is a war cry . It literally means “ ten thousand years” as in May you live ten thousand years. It’s not inherently war - oriented.
