They'll just continue to pass them anyway... Like they already do. Not doing so and expecting them to earn a passing grade would be "racist."

They can't. Mississippi law says you can't pass 3rd grade without reading at a third grade level.

Exactly.

They have another opportunity to take it this summer. Many more will take it seriously and pass the makeup, but this is concerning.

20-30% reading proficiency on grade level is kind of de rigeur for city schools.

In Baltimore, that's aspirational.

No she moved into the Mayor’s house. So more than a simple BJ.

I wonder what their cost per student is versus schools in other districts/states.

Once again, the residents there get exactly what they voted for.

If you look at the best schools in the State (Oak Grove, Madison Central, Oxford etc….) and compare them to the cost per student of Jackson Public Schools and the Delta districts it is shocking. I know when my boys were at MC the cost per student was under $10K while the failing Delta schools where over $15K.

Wouldn't that be the very definition of a DEI hire?

Louisiana passed this law last year. Students get 3 attempts to pass before being held back.

However, students with certain learning disabilities are exempt for this. I’m interested to know what disabilities because damn near every kid has an IEP these days.

There's probably ways around it. They always figure out how to game the system.

Remember how we were taught slaves weren't allowed to learn how to read or write?

The irony writes itself throughout history.

The only ways around it are to be retained twice and given two years of intensive intervention, to have an IEP or 504 and one year of intensive intervention, or to have a significant cognitive deficiency and take an alternate assessment.

I'm willing to bet it will be severe disabilities.

If it were easy to get around it, Mississippi wouldn't have shown such a devastating improvement in rankings.

If we care about those children at all we need to hold them in the 3rd grade another year and teach them to read.

If we move them along for diversity reasons those kids will suffer for the rest of their life.

I applaud the State of Mississippi for implementing this program and funding it.

Also,

The best way to ensure children are good readers is to read to them and read high quality books above the child’s reading level until the child is at least 13 or 14.

Yes, its the collective mindset and belief that the Democrat party is their salvation.

Once they break free of this mindset, things will change for the better in their own individual lives.

Faith in government is a terrible strategy for success in life.
