I don't think so. Colorado, which has become a very progressive state, overwhelmingly rejected a single payer system for the state back in November. I was surprised.

There were big time liberal/progressive groups and labor unions against the Colorado single payer law.

Why?

They don't want this to be a state by state decision. They want it done at the federal level for the entire nation, because that means a greater pool of paying customers which means lower costs for everyone.

Americans want affordable, on demand, quality health care.

Single payer is 0/3, maybe 1/3.

Old system was 2/3, 3/3 for most Americans.

Unfortunately, affordability is weighted more than the other two since they dont matter if you can't afford it.

The mechanism by which we provide coverage is a red herring for the actual problem. Healthcare costs are simply too high.

You can blame insurance companies and the lack of a global free market for pharma for that.

One thing we can gather from this is that Rs seem to hold off putting forth health insurance legislation when they knew it wouldn't be good for the country.

Obama and the dems.. not so much.

Meanwhile... back in reality.

Fewer Americans feel like insurance (much less single-payer) is the government's responsiblity has significanly declined since 2006.

Why blame insurance companies? They have a vested interest in healthcare costs being low.

They're actually responsible for a lot of processes that reduce costs, such as only reimbursing cheaper first-line therapies and requiring medical justification for more expensive therapies.

But yeah, the regulations here that restrict a global market for medications is a huge problem.

Their opposition to a true free market across state borders protects their margins and drives negative outcomes for the consumer.

Theoretically you are correct. Politically it doesn't work that way. Other topic needs attention and Trump will cut his losses and move on.

This topic will be radioactive from now on.

Do people actually think the Freedom Caucus will fold if this fails? This thing is already shaky enough and Republicans have had 7 years to get on the same page.

Where is this mythical compromise going to happen?

Yes and no. When people perceive the cost of healthcare as unaffordable--they go running into the arms of the insurers.

That's one reason why EOB's have silly high prices.
