Yes, Vitamin K, a vitamin important in coagulation now is being targeted by the idiots of the world.

Evidently parents are opting out of children getting a simple vitamin injection that prevents potentially life threatening bleeding for unfounded fears and the lack of knowledge of the bleeding issue because vitamin k has been so helpful in preventing any problems.

Any, an important PSA to the denizens of the poli board.

tha frick???? What retard parent would give their kid a vitamin INJECTION!?!?!

ETA: I can honestly say I've never had a vitamin K INJECTION. Furthermore, I can honestly say I have never bled to death.

Did you read the article? It's administered within 24 hours after birth. I don't think Flintstone chewables are a viable option at that point.

These people are idiots, but why the injection? Is there a reason they can't give their kids Flintstones' gummies? (I'm at least 55% serious)

The kids being less than 24 hours old probably has something to do with using injections rather than flintstones gummies...

No, I didn't read the article (thankfully). Still, why would there be a need to inject a newborn baby with a vitamin? Because so many prior babies have bled to death?

I know some anti-vaccine people in our school and they aren't concerned at all about potential exposure to potential hazards. I find it crazy that they are worried about the hazards of a vitamin injection but not TB.

Thanks, I obviously didn't read the article. I wasn't aware they gave infants that young injections. Not that I have a problem with it.

Not sure about Flinstones, but I was under the impression recent studies have found most vitamin pills, at least ones taken by adults, as essentially worthless.

But this story is on a bit of a different tangent from that obviously.

Not worthless, just unnecessary for most people in a developed nation with ample foodstuffs of a varied nature (balanced diet). Babies are different though. Vitamin K is acquired through diet or manufacture by intestinal flora. Newborns have a restrictive diet (poor transfer from mother) and no developed gut flora. It's simply a preventative/precautionary measure against possible uncontrolled bleeding. Better safe than sorry, right?

What's sad is that this is really a testament to how well these preventative measures have worked - people have forgotten why we needed them in the first place.

Jesus, do you guys read the linked article?

Vitamin K is an essential vitamin for coagulation of the blood. Now in infants, there is low transfer of vitamin k through the placenta and not much vitamin k usually in the breast milk.

As has been stated previously, kids don't eat flintstone vitamins.

Low vitamin K is not a common problem. But it does occur rarely. It is easily preventable with a vitamin k injection after birth. There are no drawbacks.

It really is a no brainer.

It is rather a shame because vitamin k injections work so well, the public is not even aware that this can be an issue. Injections have been routinely done since the early 1960s I believe.

Now, this problem is being seen again because idiots are refusing a simple vitamin injection to prevent it.
