The purpose of the "reset" was to do NEW START, the strategic arms limitation treaty. For whatever reason this was the priority of the Obama administration (I have theories on why this was the case). In carrying out this policy goal, other issues were purposefully ignored, specifically Ukraine, Georgia and the general stability of Eastern Europe. The Russians could give a crap about START but figured if Obama and Clinton had such a hard on about it, they could get something for it, in this case killing the missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic. The whole thing became a fiasco as the administration had to contend with both Russian negotiating strategies and domestic and European opposition to their efforts. In any case the "reset" was naive as it put arms control ahead of geopolitical realities. The Russians may be behaving in a 19th century manner, but at least it is rational in the sense they are putting their own security concerns first as opposed to 1980 ivy league pipe dreams of a nuclear free world.

The love for him on the OT board was expressed as admiration that he was an "alpha". Never understood it. Personally, I think most of the western powers are amazed that any leader of a major power would do what he is doing. They need to get over it and recognize him for what he is.

No one on the OT board thought that Obama was an "alpha" but I agree with the rest about him.

All you can do is sanctions and those need to be ratcheted up. I'll give the US credit for trying to do this. Germany and others need to support it.
