Amazon shares Ring data without owner consent
quote:

Here is something I didn’t know when I purchased Amazon Ring cameras and Amazon Echo Dots: there is a webpage where law enforcement can fill out a form, say there’s a life-threatening emergency, and get access to your data without your consent, a court order, or any kind of warrant. There’s nothing in the Terms of Service about this, and the company has maintained for years that it helps police get consent first, but it’s happening anyhow.

Over the past seven months alone, Amazon has provided private Ring videos to law enforcement 11 times, the company told Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) in a letter dated July 1st and provided to press this week....

I'm shocked. You should definitely wire your fridge, washing machine, and security cameras to the internet. Nothing bad will happen with the people who are actively destroying farming and trying to starve us.

I've said this before. I fricking hate Amazon. Between my wife's spending sprees, Alexa asking my kids if they want to order something, and this shite.... frick Amazon!

I want to be mad, but I am struggling.

My Ring faces the road, it is a view of the road. How is my privacy being violated really?

Are they watching me mow the lawn or something in real time?

I get it is private data, however there are needs to expedite ring footage for law enforcement when a crime occurs. How much would it suck for law enforcement to get approval from 20 home owners to view their ring data to catch a criminal?

Ring devices aren't limited to outdoor monitoring.

I do not have Ring inside my home, nor do I have smart appliances and devices outside of phone and TVs.

How much would it suck for police to get permission from people to get access to data that didn’t exist 15 years ago and is now everywhere to catch a criminal?

What about your neighbor's Ring, that faces your house? Rings basically form a surveillance network with Amazon owning the data. That seems like a slippery slope to me.

I'd love to see the Supreme Court slap these government tyrants and their big tech buddies with the 3rd and 4th Amendments.

Yeah, anyone placing monitoring like that inside their home deserve what they get.

It is no secret all devices track stuff and you. You have to decide how you want to live with it.

Ring is on my outside, I would never upload inside video activity to a 3rd party. That is just dumb.

That’s a very slippery slope.
I’d rather one criminal “get away” with a crime than the rest of the US sacrifice personal liberties.
Next step: Cameras on every public street corner, watching ….

Ring can be used indoors as well.

I use it to monitor a lot of my home. Indoor and out.

That shite pisses me off…they know our voices - they should only allow “buying” power to the parent’s voice-

Valid point, but we are constantly monitored by all sorts of cameras.

Anyone thinking they have any privacy once they leave the walls of their house is pretty naive. You can only control your privacy within the walls of your home.

You carry the greatest spying device ever created with you everywhere you go and it’s probably within 3 feet of you at least 90% of the day. The spying potential of those other devices are irrelevant at that point.

That is a lie. If that criminal harmed you or your family your tune would change. You would want to do and use everything possible to catch that criminal.

3 and 4th Amendments don’t apply to private companies. LE is free to use info gathered by private entities as long as it was not at/under their direction.

For instance, a non-LE individual can violate the 4A all they want as long as they aren’t asked to so by LE and then turn it over to cops and it’s perfectly admissible. A company, no matter how big, is no different than a non-LE individual.
