Echoing hawkeye, but i'd like to learn more, honestly. I actually enjoy your military posts on here.

While we have the most technologically advanced military in the world, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, battles are won with disciplined units acting in perfect cohesion. In the middle of a battle, orders are expected to be followed immediately and without question. Hesitation kills. Also, order must sometimes be given that will put soldier's life in harms way.

I'm not being specific to transgenders here. Everything I say can be applied to women or homosexuals too. I am not saying that women or gays or transgenders are incapable of making good soldiers. Well, women don't but that's a whole other story. When you have to different genders or two different sexual orientations in the same unit, romantic or sexual relationships will form. We can all sit here and say, "Well, there are rules against that." and "Can we not expect these soldiers to act more professionally than that?" And the answer is no, we cannot. Most are teenagers or in their early twenties. You know what most people that age are most concerned with, regardless of sex or sexual orientation? fricking, that's what. And sex fricks everything up.

A scenario,

A platoon is in combat with a male platoon commander. The platoon has 2 squads, one squad leader is male and the other is female. Now the female sgt and the male platoon commander have a sexual relationship. The platoon comes under fire from a machine gun nest. The female's squad is in a better position to assualt the enemy machine gun. However, the platoon cmdr. has feelings for the female sgt and doesn't want to get her killed. Especially not on his orders. So he sends the male sgt's squad even though he's out of position. 3 or 4 soldiers get killed because the plt. cmdr. didn't want his slam piece to get killed.

An that works for gays, transgenders, women.

There is more but that was long winded. I'll add some more in a bit.

ETA: I'm not saying that these people are unworthy of serving in the military. I'm saying that war is a serious and deadly business. We don't make decisions because it's fair or we don't want to hurt feelings. Or at least we shouldn't.

Address several issues as a minimum (that are currently not impacted);

- Physical Fitness Standards (currently divided by male/female and age standards)
- Specialty/Assignment Restrictions (some positions do not permit females)
- Billeting (good order and discipline/morale for all who serve)

The military is not a social experiment. First and foremost, we are concerned about accomplishing the mission and secondly preserving the lives of those we serve alongside. If you can demonstrate you can cross those hurdles with no decline in readiness then we can start talking implementation.

Exactly. The reason that our military was built as a heterosexual male only organization was not due to "ignorance", "sexism", or "discrimination". Instead it was based on the common sense that you do not want there to be any chance of sexual feelings, tensions, or any other entanglements to rear their ugly heads in a military unit. The main reason for this is due to the fact it would harm morale and unit cohesion and thus the battlefield effectiveness of that unit.

I thought ancient militaries like the Romans encouraged heterosexual relationships among the troops.

No. There's a lot of modern myths about homosexuality and Roman society.

Where there is some evidence is with Greek militaries. Would require further study on my part. But that was not the point of the thread. The point is a transgender individual being permitted to openly serve.

I don't know why this should matter. If someone wants to fight and die for our country I don't care what gender they identify as. You shouldn't either.

I don't want crazy people in the military. Sorry.

You make some excellent points. If nothing else, we could let them be in the 60mm mortar section.

The military is cutting their budget every year. They would have to reform their structure to order make this work.

Well played good sir. Alas, it is the sacrifice I make to ensure you have the best of health care.

So, any word on jump school?
