All things considered, why is the Federal government involved at all in health insurance ?

Do you really think that in this day and age and considering the wealth of the US population that there would be anyone who truly couldnt afford it be refused decent healthcare?
Is that the issue?
It seemed like that was one of the main reasons it was said that the government inserted itself into the equation and then once they were in the regulations began piling up inflating the costs.
Combine that with the courts enabling the ambulance chasers by allowing frivolous lawsuits and awarding ridiculous sums of money which caused malpractice insurance rates to skyrocket.
And so on and so forth...
How would it be if there was simply state and local oversight of doctors and hospitals and routine doctor visits could be paid out of pocket and insurance was only used for catastrophic situations?

Because we made a conscious decision in the 60s not to let seniors die destitute due to rising costs.
Because we made the same decision about the poor.
Because of Reagan.
etc.

The problem is they are trying to make every group happy and everyone loses.

Why are they involved in anything that doesn't involve national defense and judicial issues?

Why are there "rising costs" that far out-strip normal inflation? Could it be rising government involvement forcing the rising costs so eventually they'll have to step in and blame everyone and everything else for the rising costs and take control to "fix" it?

Revisionist history FTW!!!!
Medicare was passed because health insurance companies were fricking over seniors with fine print and textual gymnastics leading up to the mid-60's. Instead of taking those insurers to task the federal government decided to create its own insurance for seniors.
Because of this we've seen first-hand the effects of artificially injecting capital into a market where Demand is held in check by Price and Supply is low and somewhat static (and then people are shocked that Price goes up )

And how has the black family unit (whom it was to benefit most, as a per capita) fared in that time, hmmmm?

Should be a state issue, like most things.

People think repeal and replace means go back the the way it was before Obama Care.
It's not
Repeal only would be but the replace means government controlled

Medical technology advanced quickly in the computer age.

Ignore idiots like BamaAtl.
The only reason healthcare is so expensive is because there is a government payer source for most people that access healthcare. Healthcare is not under the influence of market forces because of this.
That's why.

Oh, and HIPAA, Title 1 (1996) and Title 2 (2003) has probably added 20% or more to the cost of delivering healthcare just trying to comply with the nonsense almost weekly changes. Bill Clinton because Arthur Ashe was outed for having AIDS. Over react much????

Because the medical lobby pads the pockets of politicians.
Why do you think they do it?

This is why they are involved ultimately. They see it as a reliable revenue stream. The more they screw it up the more they say they're needed.
It's the old saw that government comes and breaks your legs and then "provides" you with some crutches and tells you how much they're doing for you.
