If you've ever read many of these threads you'll notice that the vets on this board, myself and the others in this thread, have put forth ideas for humongous cuts to defense.

I know plenty of airline guys that like their job. It's tough and stressful but they don't consider it miserable. Plus they make a ton.

Well I flew 91 and 135 for a while. Maybe I just met the guys who came over from the airlines because they hated it.

Yep. And none of them touch on the elephant in the room. It is ok to disagree but compensation reform for military is inevitable

How do you slash compensation and attract suitable personnel?

It's the way the Marine Reserves do it with the Inspector/Instructor staffs and the Marine Reserves are exponentially better than the guard and do the exact same amount of drill periods per year. The I&I staff is also integrated into the unit so they hold some of the leadership billets when the reserve unit deploys. So for an infantry company normally the XO, Company Gunny, and one of the Plt. Sgts is from the I&I staff.
Very efficient. I endorse it!

Well there is a reason pensions and annuities are going extinct across all industries. The lifetime cost of a uniform that puts in his 20 is astronomical. You guys are the ones complaining about budget deficits but conservatives are just as unwilling as democrats to touch the big 3 drivers: SS, medicare, and military spending.
I'm a vet and a hardcore anarcho capitalist. I have no sacred cow. I will cut it all.
Your appeal to the authority of military commanders falls on deaf ears bro. I have no illusions at all about the efficacy of these commanders, or the perverse nature of their incentives.

It isn't the threat it's the deployment cycles.
You frickers only go for 90 days! suck it up!
I get your point though you cant keep deploying the same personnel
They aren't all 90 day deployments. Many are 9 months or more (Convoy Companies, TACP, Combat Control, PJ's, ...).

Like any other sector there are some very smart and capable military folks and others not so much.
Merry Christmas. I dont wanna argue

What else did we expect to happen by purposely drawing down the numbers and asking those left to pick up the slack?
But, "Oh! Cut defense spending, and kick people out so we can spend less on personnel!"
Performance and operational capabilities be damned.
It was like that back in the 90s drawdown. The big problem back then and to an extent today, is the original drawdown that used a triangle and just cut one side of personnel off. Well it could work IF the military obligations was cut but it didn't happen. I remember watching alot of sailors get pushed out while at same time the Navy struggled to meet deployments let alone provide sufficient training to handle such duties.

Exactly, cuts is not the issue. It is where and how they are "CUT"! We are toooo damn dependent on the Industrial Military Complex and their technology. We need to put money into MANPOWER! We are too small!
Give me Marine Rifle Companies, close air support. We need a bigger, More robust Army, somewhere in the neighborhood of 600k Soldiers. tanks.....did I mention, Tanks!
And Close Air Support Assets! Did I mention that?????
And if you want to do some of this through a "reserve system". Have at it.
