“It took, obviously, a number of weeks to try to figure out a way for him to see this intelligence, because the agencies were stonewalling, we’re told, to allow him and others to see it,” said Housley. “This is all coming from folks that are in these agencies and frustrated with the politics that is taking place in these agencies.”
“We’re told that the main issue here is not only the unmasking of the names, but the spreading of names for political purposes that have nothing to do with national security and everything to do with hurting and embarrassing Trump and his team,” reported Housley.
“Fox also learned that an individual with direct knowledge that after Nunes had been approached by his source, the agencies basically would not allow him in at all,” said Housley.

Why the frick can't Trump find out who these people are and fire them all? He is the boss of the executive branch and the intel agencies are under his purview.
Democrats are very good at doing massive purges (like Stalin) when they get in power. Republicans need to learn to utilize the same tactics.

One would think. But now we know why he took the route he did.

Makes no sense. The information was at the White House and so was his source.

His source was in the NSA. He first learned of this in February. It wasn't until late March that he verified the information at the White House

Oh yeah it does.

A way to check the information was at the WH.

No. Again, his source is a whistle blower protected under the PPD-19. The people who was reported by the NYT are those who allowed him access.

Perfect sense
He was tipped off
Went to see docs. Was told Nope
Asked around about other secure areas. Was told WH has secure server. Invites himself over
Sees the docs. Wow! Has Trump seen this? Nope, didn't know where to look
Goes to see Trump

yep... not that hard to follow

Here's how it went down:
1) Nunes had been hearing "rumors" since January about Trump's team being under questionable surveillance. He had already been contacted by someone on the inside who was concerned about the legality (and ethics) of it all.
2) This whistleblower was from NSA since we're talking about electronic intercepts. I personally believe the whistleblower was Mike Rogers himself and I think Trump and Nunes learned about this whole thing after Rogers went to Trump Tower (without Clapper's permission) to "interview" with Trump.
3) Nunes needed to see this info for himself and there are only two places to see NSA COMINT data. One is at NSA itself, while the other is at the secure facilities at the WH (Eisenhower building). The Congressional SCIF does not provide access directly to executive branch intel. Such arrangements can be made, but Nunes didn't want to out his whistleblower.
4) Nunes first tried to just go directly to NSA facilities, but he was denied. As a result, he needed to find a way to the WH.
5) At some point he contacted the NSC people at the WH. He got in touch with Ellis and Watnick and they agreed to take him where he needed to go. They basically "checked him in" to the secure facility.
6) Nunes knew what to look for once he got access because the whistleblower had given him the "serial numbers" of the documents in question.
7) Nunes then goes and tells Trump what he saw. Everyone focuses on why he would brief Trump when Trump already had the data, but I would argue that Trump had not seen it. This whistle blower was NOT from the WH. The two NSC guys were not the source of the info, they were only his WH escorts to get to the info.
8) Nunes briefed the press along the way multiple times and made it clear what he was doing. The press is trying to spin it that he was somehow acting surreptitiously. It's ridiculous.
