It might not matter yet, but (with the huge caveat of "if this is true"), it could certainly matter in the long-term. Making and holding alliances, providing vision, sound strategic decision-making - those are not easy things to do nor are they traits with which many are blessed.

AQI sprialed down and then was beaten badly when Zarqawi was killed. They were essentially rudderless and broke apart into a bunch of different factions.
