Journalists continue to be arrested for covering various protests around the country, with several currently facing criminal charges. The Obama administration waged a war on whistleblowers who leaked information about its activities, leading to the prosecution of more leakers than any previous administrations combined. To this day, American journalists are still not protected by a federal “shield law” guaranteeing their right to protect their sources and other confidential work-related information. And over the past few years, there has been an increase in prolonged searches of journalists and their devices at the US border, with some foreign journalists being prevented from any travel to the US after they covered sensitive topics such as Colombia's FARC or Kurdistan.

Thanks Obama! Thought this was about freedom of the Press, and it just shows what a Police state we were just rescued from...

US press freedom, enshrined in the First Amendment to the 1787 constitution, has encountered several major obstacles over the past few years, most recently with the election of President Donald Trump. He has declared the press an “enemy of the American people” in a series of verbal attacks toward journalists, while attempting to block White House access to multiple media outlets in retaliation for critical reporting.

I'm actually surprised the ranking is that high.

Press freedom does not mean freedom from criticism or freedom to have unfettered access to targets of reporting.
Press freedom just simply means that the government does not throw reporters in jail or be murdreed for their reporting and are allowed to protect their sources in reasonable cases.
That's it and anything else is fair game.

But they're not being arrested for being journalist or doing journalism

Apparently where we draw the line on "Freedom loving friend, Free-Trade agreement partner" and "Evil dictator oppressing his people and a scourge we have to protect Europe from" is at the #147 1/2 line.

Most times they are not. They're used to bully and intimidate the press to keep them from doing any further reporting.
Land of the free my arse.

UNPRECEDENTED!

Fake news.
Just look at how the press treats our government and you can tell we have strong freedom of press here.

They shite on both Trump and Obama so I'm not sure what's funny?

I'm not debating the legitimacy of the charges; I'm debating the legitimacy of the article saying they were arrested because they were doing journalist shite.....they were arrested bc they were either assaulting someone or destroying something.

I admittedly don't know anything about reporters being arrested during protests but I do know that many protests recently have become violent and destructive and that police arrest many people they think are involved. Because of that, many of those arrested don't get convicted. That isn't anti-press, though.

Without looking I'll go with 10%

Two prominent ones(Wesley Lowery and Ryan Reilly) were arrested while sitting in a McDonald's during the protests in Ferguson.
The charges were dropped.

I seriously question the methodology of a system that places South Africa above the United States in freedom of the press. If you knew anything about that place, you'd know that's LOLworthy. It makes me think their rankings are garbage.
The U.S. isn't perfect by any means, but there seems to be a fairly high correlation between countries that don't matter and countries that rate highly on that list.
