What they don’t understand is that the universal minimum wage is, and always will be, zero. You don’t pay an employee that you don’t employ.

You know those kiosks at restaurants and other places? Get ready for more of those, which is great.

It’s not that the business owner can’t afford $15 minimum wage, it’s that the people can’t afford a product that is priced paying people a $15 minimum wage thus making the business a no go.

The level of stupid. The people that say these things have no business sense, have never run a business, and have never been in a position running a business.

Do you pay $15 to people who cannot show up consistently?

because that is who cannot get off minimum wage

These discussions never look at the qualifications of the absolute worst of the employee pool, which is what we are talking about here.

I don’t care what state you live in, is it really feasible to pay someone $15 to be a fry cook? Let’s be reasonable here.

Today those teaching microeconomics would likely agree with raising the minimum wage, and quote a lot of Krugman’s nonsense to show why, and at the same time demonstrate how Friedman was wrong.

the comments on that tweet are proof that we are doomed. the entire comment section is filled with people saying “if you think $15 is high you should see what the minimum wage should be” or “$15 still aint enough to live on”. one moron arse white girl said “if you cant afford to pay $15 an hour the dont open up a business but instead save your money for a few years than open up a business”. the level of stupidity in that comment alone is just off the charts. so we are supposed to save up our money and then pay our employees out of OUR bank account because some old shite says we have to pay some pizza boy $15 to make a greasy pizza.

It's incredible logic.

Close your damn business if you can't afford $15 an hour wages!

Businesses close.

Less jobs available.

Crimes, suicides, depression increases.

People are so short sighted and don't know what is best for themselves. Maybe that's why they're working minimum wage jobs in the first place

Yeah pay the dude at Taco Bell that is annoyed he actually has to take my order $15 an hour. makes sense.

I own a small business and I pay my employees at least $15.00 an hour, some more, but I'm retired and have a retirement coming in. I do this just to keep busy and do not do it to get rich. Sure I make a little money, but if I didn't have a retirement check coming in, there is no way I could afford to pay $15.00 an hour. This is going to shut down a lot of small businesses.

And it can't happen overnight either. That's the main issue. No economy would ever be prepared for a minimum wage to over double overnight. Even a decade long gradual rollout would be extremely detrimental.

How blind are you to think $15 in SF or NYC = $15 in LaPlace or Jennings, LA.

That’s like $31k a year full time. Let’s not get carried away on what an unfathomably out of touch standard it is.

I’m not arguing $15 is the right number but do y’all think any form of minimum wage is in need of being eliminated?

It's out of touch in the vast majority of places where you don't need 2-3k per month to rent an apartment like New York, etc.

I think we should let the market dictate things. If no one wants to work for the wages a company is offering due to their skillset and better options, the company will either raise their wages to attract employees to meet their needs, change their business model or they will go out of business. If people are willing to work for what they are offering, that means people value and want what they are offering on some level. No one is forcing those people to apply to work there as there are other options out there.

We also have things in place like the Earned Income Tax Credit and things like that to help those making lower wages.

These assholes aren't owners they are workers so they never see things from the owners perspective.

They are literally saying every business owner (specifically food and service) should almost double their payroll.

Most of these business are barely making it by right now.

Yes, it's only the complete morons with no sense of what it costs to run a business that think $15 minimum wage talk during a terrible time when businesses are closing left and right is great. That inspires zero employer confidence for down the road in a time when many are considering shutting their doors for good due to income and expense challenges related to everything going on right now.

How do kids get jobs? I hope they are at least thoughtful enough to offer exceptions for those that are less than 18. Or can’t they just set it by zip code so it takes into account areas that have lower cost of living.
