Most over-rated

I'd like opinions on the top 5 most over-rated (active) college coaches (#1 being most over-rated).
My list:
1. Jim Tressel...Has this guy won a big game in the last five years? Considering the talent he gets, it's embarrassing. It's a big game Saturday with USC so they will get their arse handed to them (again). Buckeye fans still love Tressel I guess. Good for them. I hope he stays there forever. And I've listened to this guy give plenty of interviews. He just doesn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer to me.
2. Rich Rodriguez...A winner in the Big Least does not a great coach make. Losing to a crappy Pitt team last year with a chance to get to the title game says it all. Good luck at Michigan. If he lasts 3 years there he'll be lucky.
3. Tommy Bowden...I would put him at #2 but folks are finally beginning to catch on that this guy just isn't very good. Has he ever won a big game? As soon as I saw that he'd signed a new long term contract, I thought, "That's one more team LSU won't have to worry about for at least 5 more years."
4. Charlie Weiss...The only reason he's not higher on the list is because he hasn't been at it long enough. Two more years of his pathetic record at ND and he's toast.
5. Pat Hill...He occasionally pulls an upset, but he also loses games he should win. And if he's so good, why is he still at Fresno State?
As an aside, a couple of comments for those coming up to Seattle next year (I'm a 13-year resident). Lots of good places to eat but my favorite spot is the Metropolitan Grill
(corner of Second and Marion downtown). Expensive but worth it, prepare to spend $50 per person, not counting booze. Great steaks and northwest seafood, tremendous service, super wine list. Casual, kinda raucus atmosphere, come as you are. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the country.
And I'm going to throw one hotel out there for you. If money is no object, I'd stay at the Edgewater. It's downtown right on the waterfront only a few blocks from the ferry dock. In fact, most (if not all) the rooms actually OVERHANG the water on Elliot Bay. You can watch the ferries come and go from your room, very romantic.
I haven't checked the price but I'm guessing the rooms will run $300-400, maybe more. But make your reservations, it will fill up quickly this time of year. The weather is almost always spectacular here July-Sept. Today is typical, 72 degrees and sunny. Also this is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Be sure to take the ferry across the Sound to Bremerton. About one-hour each way. You can take your car or board on foot.

Tommy Bowden is definitely not overrated. Most People have said for a long time that he may be one of the worst coaches for an upper-level BCS team. He's been on the "hot seat" for about 4 years running now at Clemson. This year will probably be his last unless they can rebound and win the ACC ... even that may not be enough. I've never heard anyone speak of Bowden as a good coach, so he therefore cannot be considered "overrated."
I actually think Tressel is a great coach and I'd love to have him at LSU if circumstances were different and we didn't have Miles. He's solid, can just be a bit predictable on offense when he's matched against teams with equal or greater talent.
I'd add Saban to that list. For someone that is always hailed for being such a great coach, I believe a coach needs to have more than one season where he lost less than 3 games in a season. He's had ONE season his entire career in coaching where he lost less than 3 games. Saban is a great recruiter and great organizer, but Great coach he is not.

Not sayin he's a great coach but he has pulled his own name out of many other opportunities because he says he loves fresno st. so much he doesn't wanna leave.. jus sayin

Pat Hill shouldn't be on there

Pete Caroll.
Think about. He has the most talented team in the nation, according to the recruiting rankings. He plays in a horrendous conference that doesn't feature any other squads with comparable talent. He has the benefit of starting near the top of the polls each and every season.
And yet, despite these advantages, since 2004, he has lost a game or two to far inferior teams each season.

I really want to agree with you, but I dont

Okay I will say it, I have no grudge against the guy but Steve Spurrier is over-rated to me. He has not provided a contender since leaving Florida. I agree he had great years at Florida but he is not a coach I find intimidating anymore.

quote:i think hes a solid coach who is willing to play anyone, anywhere, and i respect that-- wish he was making our sched. but my beef stems from him getting all this run nationally when he hasnt won the WAC since 1999. for real? you cant steal a WAC conference title one year since 1999? its the WAC-- not the SEC, the WAC- the western athletic conference. really?
5. Pat Hill...He occasionally pulls an upset, but he also loses games he should win.

Bobby Petrino at Arkansas. Again, if you are not going to a state rich in talent (Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma....)the chances of having success slim. Just because you win at Louisville does not equate to more success at an SEC school that does not have a ton of D1 players. Saban and Miles are good coaches that took advantage of great talent in LA.

Has he lost any games he's had no business losing in that time?

I do agree that Tressel wins the games he's supposed to typically (which is pretty much OSU's entire regular season schedule). But Illinois 2007 does come to mind.

1. Charlie Weiss. And it isn't even close.
2-5 is debatable depending on the criteria.

Pete Carroll should really be in there.
Ever since Reggie, Lendale and Leinart left the team they hasn't been the same since. Losing to Stanford last season and UCLA the year before. Thats Unacceptable with the kind of talent USC has.
Thats Like LSU football losing to Vanderbilt or Miss st. or even worse losing to Tulane.
