First of all, as an almost hourly lurker of this board, let me say thank you to all of the recruiting "guru's" who provide insightful knowledge to this board.
Here's my question, how long has recruiting been a nation wide interest? How long have the star ratings been used? I was just wondering how recruiting got to be such a big deal.
thanks in advance.

people older than me on here read recruiting magazinges in louisiana for some time now.
I am not sure what year it actually became followed on a widespread bases
as for stars, rivals went up in like 2001.

I think it started a lot with "Parade All-Americans."
I forgot which magazine would release this list of high school players, but if you were on it them you were the creme of the crop.
It has been a slow evolution since then...plus the growth of the internet has allowed for recruiting information to be passed from person to person in a more timely manner.

There really has been a decline in newspaper readership! Parade Magazine is a Sunday insert.

I believe the McDonald's game in baskeball really started it and the USA Today High school poll, and then it just kind of evolved into what we have today in football. Plus most people know that recruiting gets you ten win seasons in the SEC. In other confernces it can get you to the BCS Championship(OSU)...But in the SEC it takes recruiting plus great coaching to get you that SEC Championship(which is harder than winning the BCSCG)...
