Early Enrollees

It seems like we have several this year. Shep, Drayton, and I know there are a few more. How many will we have?
Could mean the 2009 team has more Freshman starters than any other LSU team.

Starters? as in the players who see the field first. Being in Spring Ball could give some of these players a real chance to compete in Fall Camp and along with the likely hood of freshmen starting on the lines next year I think we could have more freshmen see the field next year than ever before. I know we have more early enrollees than just 2, Pratt I believe is another are there more?

Well, I don't want to spoil your fun by having you check out the roster, but here goes. What 2009 recruit do you see starting?
Russell Shepard? He'll get reps but do you really think he'll start over Lee, Hatch, or Jefferson?
Drayton Calhoun? He's going to start as a true frosh above Jai Eugene, Chris Hawkins, Patrick Johnson, Ron Brooks, John Williams, and Derrick Bryant?
Dexter Pratt is going to start over Keiland Williams, Charles Scott, Richard Murphy, and Stevan Ridley?

I don't think so for Pratt starting at RB, but I belive that he and Drayton might start on special teams and see some playing time. As for Shep I don't think he will start at QB but he could see alot of PT in the Wizards offense. We will have holes to fill at LB, DT, DE, and on the O-line. Along with the possibilty of Freshmen at WR I was just was thinking that we could see a lot of Freshmen in 09 and that being here early for some players, even if they aren't likely to see the field, def. helps their chances.

I hope not cuz that would mean either a lot of injuries or pitiful play from upperclassmen. I'd rather we start solid experienced players than fresh out of high school phenoms. If they are that good, then they'll earn their stripes on the field bro.

I hope Calhoun stays on offense. We are so loaded with young talent at DB that he could get lost in the mix. He's got some speed.

I don't think I would be alone by saying I wasn't assuming you were talking about "starting" on special teams. I'm not trying to flame here, but I don't see a single 09 recruit starting on offense or defense.

So you don't think he will start.

LB: Perry Riley, Kelvin Sheppard, Jacob Cutrera, Ryan Baker, Kellen Theriot, Kyle Prater, Shomari Clemons, Ace Foyil
DT: Al Woods, RJF, Drake Nevis, Kentravis Aubrey, Cordian Hagans (if he doesn't get moved to OL)
DE: Rahim Alem, Sidell Corley, Pep Levingston, Chancey Aghayere, Lavar Edwards, Chase Clement
OL: We have one senior on the O-line this year.

You're definitely entitled to your opinion, but common sense would point otherwise. We had 17 freshmen redshirt last season and we're likely to see a similar number this season. With all the talent backlogged on the roster, I just don't see many true freshmen starting over the next few years. The only true freshman with a remote chance of seeing starting time this year is Patrick Johnson, and that's because he was the number one recruit in the country at a position of need (CB).
ETA: Maybe, maybe Davenport or McFarland (fingers crossed) could see starting time during their freshman year if Woods and RJF leave or we get hit hard by the injury bug.

It would be better for us to red shirt the whole 2009 class with the roster that we have and depth of talent and experience.
One could consider Edwards a DT, thus if RJF and Woods return, we would have 6 DTs. Therefore, not need to burn Davenports or McFarland’s frosh year. I certainly wish Steltz would have been redshirted by Saban his first year. He would have been even better this year.
A #1 or #2 class that is all red shirted would be awesome come their sophomore through senior years.
Most freshmen are simply not ready physically. Jones - last year was the exception. It’s a good way to get players hurt - See Pittman if you don't believe me.
A Red shirt puts them in the weight room, bulking up with size, strength, and sometimes speed. But, its hard to convince most kids that they will be bigger, stronger, faster, more able to stand the punishment of full contact at game speed, and smarter (know the offense/defense & their position much better) if they red shirt their first year. It also allows them to make an academic foundation so that they don't run into poor grades/maintaining academic eligibility issues during their time in college athletics.
I wish that every college player was forced to red shirt and stay for 4 years to honor their commitment. The NFL is unethical and is doing a lifetime disservice allowing them to come out of college without a degree. It’s all about $$$$$$. But, if they get injured in the NFL, most regret not finishing their degree because they need it to get a job after their time in the NFL is over.
But, if you are 15 years old and reading this, I can’t expect you to have the perspective of me with my lifetime experience, so I know many will disagree. But, over time opinions change after you go through hard times, become unemployed, and think about mistakes you have made in your life. The best lessons in life are sometimes very, very costly and bitter pills to swallow.

Who was the last true freshman to start for LSU (and I mean not out of injury, but because they won the job)?
Laron Landry?

Isn't Craig Loston an early enrollee? That would give him even less time to decide between LSU and Clemson?
