And for your neighbors. I'll never understand the desire to have a loud barking dog around.

Dogs tend to have trouble with written tests. I'd let the dog learn a trade.

If you can afford potential medical bills and actually give the dog the attention it deserves then go for it. I haven't gotten a dog because I work 8-5. Why in the hell would I punish my dog and have it alone all day long while I work. That's not fair for the dog. If I could be at home more I would get one. But I live in an apartment so I would hostage to a house.

Not every breed is known for incessant barking.

To the OP, if you have the time and resources, then get a dog. There are breeds that do well in apartments. Just make sure you are right for the particular breed, not the other way around. Don't get a breed just because it looks cool. Get a breed that matches your personality and experience level.

Really bad idea. Takes away a lot of freedom and your ability to up and leave for a fun trip.

Even if you're out of college and working, don't get a dog until you've got a yard you can let it out in or someone that is going to let it out all the time. Its a pain in the arse for you and its not fair to the dog.

ETA: you're going to get the dog anyway. Guaranteed.

Congrats!! You must be doing something right. Most dogs don't even get a high school diploma.

Bad idea. Most college kids don't have the time.

I got a dog my last year of school. I was mainly focused on finishing and done with the party scene, so I had plenty of time for it. I loved having my pup around during that time.

If he can make the grades and get a scholarship - go for it.

But paying out of pocket for tuition? THAT would be foolish.

Bad idea.
I got my golden over a year ago and still in college, and love it.
But I have also been with my now fiance almost 6 years and don't go out all the time. Can't imagine life without him now though. Especially since half our time is the dog park.

Not just bad. Terrible. Unless you are a hermit who never leaves your apartment except to go to class, the dog will be miserable.

Enjoy your life while you are young. Don't stay at your apartment much. Get a dog when you settle down...

This. People who have never been responsible for a dog think the only expense is dog food. I have a healthy medium-size dog and my expenses are upward of $2500 a year.

Literally the only purpose of a dog for a college is student is so one can take it for walks down sorority row to meet girls via the "oh look how CUTE!!!!" effect puppies can elicit.

Dogs are a PITA if you're in a situation where nothing else is holding you back from just heading out and getting drunk and not coming back for the night or taking off on short notice for a weekend trip or things of that nature. JMO.

If I had a dog right now it would be a headache for me and the dog would be miserable.
