Looking for opinions on having a dog while in college and living in an apartment. Good idea or bad idea?

Also would be interested in what breeds would be best for a small living area

Maybe it's ok for a small dog, I don't know.

Having a dog in college is fine, IMO, it's the apartment part that sucks. I knew lots of people with dogs, but usually in a house or fraternity house where they got a lot of attention and time outside.

I did it while working full-time and going to college full-time. He will turn 8 in 2 days and has been the best dog I've ever owned.

Congrats!! You must be doing something right. Most dogs don't even get a high school diploma.

Bad idea. Assuming you aren't a loser, you're not going to be home anywhere near enough to justify a dog.

Can you afford the costs associated with being a responsible pet owner(food, vet bills, heartworm meds, vaccines, boarding dog when you go on vacations, grooming, etc)? And do you have the time to properly care for the dog(esp when it's a puppy)?

That's the 2 main things. Getting a dog is a 12-18 year commitment.

it's not so much college (depending on your study/party/work habits), but if you plan on working a regular job or going to prof/grad school afterward, that's when it would be more of a burden. i waited until i could control my own schedule for the most part to get a dog.

spending $$ for doggie daycare every day is kind of burdensome for someone right out of school.

I have a lab, border collie and Australian Shepard mix, in hindsight, 2 was too many, but I love them, but I also have own my own home and have a small backyard, if your are in a small apartment I would suggest moving to a house with a yard otherwise that dog will be miserable

Yeah I desperately want a dog but i don't know if I would home enough to give him everything he needs. And I don't want to burden a dog on roommates

If he has the grades, I wouldn't stop him. The good thing is he already knows how to use his PAWS.

This. Only get a dog in college if you have the following:
1. A fenced in backyard where it can play while you're in class
2. a set time in the morning and evening when you can feed it
3. the time to take it on walks most days and play with it every day.

Can you afford hundreds of dollars worth of medical expenses should the dog get sick or injured? Would your parents bail you out if something happened?

It's alot like the morality having kids in the ghetto. You dont have any business having any if you cant afford them without help. If you can afford a dog and all of its expenses on 20 hrs a wk AND you dont have roommates, then knock yourself out.
