If this is for the home and not concealed carry I say a full size polymer 9mm. (Glock, S&W, Springfield, Ruger, etc...)

Most women are more comfortable with the simpler operation that a revolver provides. Unless she's willing to go through some training with semi-auto's, then I'd suggest sticking with a revolver.

Ruger (LCR $450) and S&W($1,100) are now making 9mm revolvers.

If you insist on a semi-auto for a house gun, go with a full sized pistol for better accuracy and less recoil.

If she's going to conceal carry, then go with one of the single stack 9mm pistols - Shield, Glock 43, XDS, or LC9.
If you go with the LC9, get the striker fired version.
S&W Shield is also a good option.

The biggest polymer 9mm she can grip comfortably after SHE holds it if this is a home defense pistol. Glocks have horrible ergonomics but if SHE likes it and grip a G19 or G17 comfortably then go for it. Full sized polymers with better ergonomics than Glock include - Walther PPQ M2, H&K VP9, S&W M&P9, Ruger SR9, Springfield XDM. If it is going to be a concealed gun, then the compact version of all of those. A single stack compact will not be fun at all for her to shoot which means she will shoot it less instead of looking forward to shooting it, which means she wont be seasoned with her gun.

Lots of talk now about the 9mm EAA Pavona, which is supposedly redesigned especially for women with lighter recoil spring (so they can pull the slide back), repositioned slide release, shortened trigger pull, etc. Looks like they really made an attempt to improve the CZ-75 based design for women. So much so that it is the 2015 Womens Gun Of The Year according to NRA. I have not handled one myself, but I am interested in handling one with consideration of getting one for my wife and daughter.

Looks sharp. I got my wife a S&W featherweight .38. She loves it, but I want her to get comfortable with polymers. Might look more into this one.

That's odd that she likes shooting it being as that it's so light at 15.1 oz. I would assume that would be a pretty snappy gun.

My wife is no sissy. She's tiny, but pound for pound she's strong as hell. Former gymnast...

For a house gun? I dont get why you would do that at all.

That LC9 would not be an enjoyable gun to shoot at all.

I would definitely strike that one from the list.

As others have said, look at a bigger gun.

Maybe consider a 1911 in 9mm. 1911 would be a single stack that would keep the grip narrow.

Springfield makes a Range Officer in 9mm.

The best one for her is what feels most comfortable in her hands. It needs to be something she likes or she won't shoot. There are plenty of 9mm compacts or subcompacts out there, but depending on the use, she might like a Glock 19 over something smaller. Doesn't have to be a Glock of course, just using it for size difference. The Glock 43 shoots like you would expect it to, and it has a smaller grip, but I prefer the S&W shield to that. Let her hold a bunch of different pistols until she finds what she likes.
