I did quite well.

For $10 total, I got a 14k gold necklace (4 grams), mohagany glass top jewelry box from Bombay Co, very old Coca-Cola tin bottle thermometer (sans the thermometer), and an old cast iron horse head hitching post topper from New Orleans.

Yesterday, I got a near mint Vanson leather jacket for $40 (it is $700 new) and an Abu Garcia Black Max for $5.

Don't mind me asking but do you keep or sell all this stuff you buy from garage sales.

I sell my stuff on ebay. I've been doing it for over 10 years now.

I am 46 years old.

Estate sales are better than garage sales (which I do go to), but garage sales are a little more fun.

I am guessing the people didn't know it was gold or they wouldn't haveput a $1 tag on it.

The reel has nothing wrong with it except cosmetic issues, chips and stuff. I may keep it

If people are dumb enough not to know what they are selling, why would i tell them?

I have made 10's of thousands of dollar over the last 12 years or so on this exact reason.

Nothing like going to an estate sale that are handled by "professionals" and grab a GI Joe or some rare LSU item for $1, knowing it's worth $500.

I'm not criticizing you. I despise ignorance. It's just that I find it hard to believe they didn't know what it was. In fact, with all of the antiques and collectible shows on tv I'm surprised you'd find anything of value underpriced. Those who would be stupid and underprice it don't seem like the people who'd have anything I'd want.

One of my main basic rules for garage selling: I only go to rich and/or old neighborhoods. Rich people buy good stuff and sell it cheap when they have a garage sale, just wanting to get rid of it.

Middle class and the poor people have junk and think its worth more then it actually is worth. They have garage sales to make money.

Every weekend, there are at least a dozen sales in the Shenandoah area. I never go to these because it is the same trash at every sale, baby stuff, junk from Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and new toys.

A friend of mine bought a box for $2 last week from a house in the Garden District. The people even knew what was in there, but still sold it. It had tickets, programs, and an 8mm home movie film of the Beatles playing in New Orleans in 1966 (or when ever).

A lot of stuff I buy just because I think its cool. The cast iron horse head from New Orleans, i get home to realize it worth ~ $150. I paid $5 for it.

Iphones took the fun out of garage selling because I can look up the value of an item before I buy it. It makes it easier, but not as fun.

You give people way too much credit. Some people truly have no idea what they have. You should see the Reddit boards dedicated to flipping, thrift stores, etc. People that know what to look for find some really good stuff.

I just sold over $3K worth of vintage NES and SNES games on Amazon that I found. I didn't find it all at a garage sale, but rather at repo houses I manage that someone left as trash but the point still stands that people are are ignorant about what they have sometimes. One game alone was worth $350.

This sounds a lot like the stupid American pickers valuations.

Worth 150
Bought 5
Profit 145

They ain't sold it, they're just making up numbers. Didn't watch that show for long.

Going back to middle class and poor neighborhoods, I have been to a few. I cannot stand when someone looks up and prints an Ebay page and tapes it to an item, trying to show what they are worth.

It is usually an active item, not a closed auction, and they grab the highest auction they can find.

They don't understand is what people are asking for on Ebay does not value something. Closed auctions is a much better measurement of value.

You will always see these Ebay sheets at middle class and poor neighborhoods.

Thats one item, there is no way to know exactly how much it will sell for, i just look at closed auctions.

The other items I listed are very easily valued. The necklace alone has over $50 in scrap gold (that was my offer at Patton's this morning).
