Here's Louis Napoleon Nelson's 1921 Confederate pension application. He's the best known black "Confederate" soldier. But, as you will notice, he's classified as a "servant" or "cook," not a soldier.

Also, note on page 10 that his former master says he should be given a pension because of his "good conduct" since the war...code for "he's a good'n" and/or "faithful darkey."

ETA: This guy's site does a pretty good job exploring the "black Confederate" revisionist phenomenon.

I think the author of the article decided the phrase "slave owner" was too distant for maximum impact, so they threw in the word signaling today's most heinous crime against humanity -- racism

Sad but true. 100%

Slavery was a disgusting practice, but his desire to cover it up shows what a phony, image conscious a-hole he is. I suspect his advocacy for "the unfortunate" runs as deep as is convenient for him.

this

And also, does he really think people give that much of a shite what his ancestors did 200 years ago?

"Well, I was gonna see that new Batman movie, but Affleck's great great great granddad owned slaves."

Yeah right.

This too. I cannot fault a person for what their ancestors did. I'd bet that during multiple points in one's ancestry you could find both slaveholder and slave.

It shows how warped his thinking is. Wouldn't it be a better story/picture that a great great grandson of a slaveholder is an advocate, albeit shallow advocacy, for civil rights?

Hey Ben, you stupid MFer - it still happened. You had nothing to do with it. You cant change it. Live your life the way you want to without regard to that.
Gawd, bleeding hearts are so...so... (I want to use the word gay, but that would be an insult to homosexuals) so fricking stupid sensitive

You guys are unbelievable. They literally believed it was okay to own human beings based on the color of the skin, and they actively partook in that practice, and you're going to argue that isn't racist?

It doesn't matter what we think of them today and how we view them here in the future.

The morals in 2015 are not the same as 1789 to 1865 morals. No shite they didn't see it as racist and they saw slaves as simply property like just like we see property like lawnmower to cut grass or a skillet to fry eggs on today.

It's ignorant as shite to assume 2015 morals are the same and translate seamlessly into any random time period.

People considered the practice abhorrent back then as well. A not insignificant amount of founding fathers felt so as well.

Why is revisionism bad?

Because it ignores the morals and values they had at the time and how they saw society and ran it. And it ignores context of the situation in the historical lesson. There are probably things we do today that are moral and we don't bat an eye at that will be considered evil and immoral decades to hundreds of years down the road and we would disagree with their interpretation.

Slavery in this country was nothing new and it predates this country's history. Many powerful civilizations like the Romans, Atzecs, Mayans, Medieval europe, and Chinese dynasties heavily depended on slave labor and were far more brutal to their slaves than the USA and yet none of them are considered evil empires and societies like the antebellum south is viewed today. Strange.

"A not insignificant amount "
===
So in normal language, does this mean a significant amount? Jeez!
And don't get all high and mighty -- I probably have way more degrees than you -- doesn't make me better or smarter -- just seemed like a pretentious statement. But that's just my humble opinion

fouldeliverer claims to be a teacher meaning he's a hacked off liberal with a Bachelors degree helping revise history to suit his own agenda. My wife and I are both educated in history as well. I did extensive research in the civil war an have posted info in multiple threads.

Forrest from his own primary sources listed the many times he commented on how freed blacks served his regiments. He also founded the KKK and then later spoke at organizations that would become precursors to the NCAAP on positive race relations. History can show all the sides to the story and how people can change their mind and positions and how morals and values don't transcend time, they evolve slowly over human history. We can only examine it through our own perspective but the smartest of us do it without bias and attempt to understand the entire scope, not the most politically correct one.

And reading DiLorenzo and O'Reily's "history" books don't count as studying history.

Getting Bachelor degrees from LSU for both of us does count as studying history.

Normally the person making the claim (particularly a claim of which 99% of experts in the field discredit) provides the proof.

I don't care what your educational credentials are, you are coming off as a pretentious a-hole because people dare to claim something you say is wrong

So much irony here. People like you and Affleck love to use knowledge like this when racial issue arise. I guess it only is relevant when applied to white conservatives.
