About 10 months ago, I developed the shanks. Took about 6 weeks off, they were still there. Took a lesson, cured the problem for some time but never ended up back where I was.

Now I literally can't make solid contact with the ball on a full swing of a 9-iron. I can get up to a half-swing with a clean hit, but after that I'm at a loss. Nothing feels comfortable.

Never had this much anxiety even as a junior golfer...first time I truly gave up on a range session yesterday.

Play through it,thats the only way to get rid of it...at times it seems like you can't hit a ball 100yds but once you fix it you will be fine.

I had a serious case of the shanks when chipping several years ago. It was the weirdest thing, no matter what I did every chip/pitch went almost straight right. Took a couple of lessons and they couldn't cure it. I don't remember how I got rid of it but havn't had any issues since then.

Try cheech's advice from Tin Cup.

i lost mine a few months ago. you would've thought i'd never hit a golf ball in my life. luckily it only lasted a couple of weeks.

i just grabbed what i thought was my best club...went to the range...and didn't leave til i was hitting it.

Had em. Took about 3 months to fix with lessons but honestly it was more of a mental thing on my part. Thought more about just "compressing" the ball with contact and it went away.

Almost every golfer goes through the shanks but to get rid of them, this is what you do:

1st - Get the weight OFF your toes
2nd - Hit the inside of the ball (pretend the ball is a clock dial and hit it at 5:00)
3rd - there is no 3rd

Fortunately for me I never had it to begin with so I've had no reason to "lose" it. I figure I'm getting much more enjoyment from it anyway. I don't get frustrated when I duck hook my drive....I just smile.

Plus I'm getting a better deal per 18 than your better golfers out there. If it costs $100 to play and I shoot say a 108 and you shoot a 78. You paid $1.28 per shot where as I only paid $.93.

For being the shitty golfer that I am.

It's most likely something in your alignment being off throwing your timing off. Get a long mirror and look at yourself set up in it with ball on the ground. Make sure everything is square.

When my swing gets off, 80% of the time it has something to do with the way in lining up and not realizing it until I see it.

It also could be where your holding the club. Make sure your not too far away from your body. This would force to to chop or reach more for the ball as opposed to a full, clean follow thru.
