not overly surprising. obviously we have known for a while the trend was towards a single, mobile device. this is just the next step in that.
apple hasnt really wanted you to upgrade their machines anyhow for a while now. your laptop is now just like your phone... running slow? get a new one.

You haven't been able to upgrade the RAM on the Macbook Pro since 2012 and the introduction of the retina display.

I'd pay 3x the price to not have to deal with a pc. Go troll elsewhere sheep.

If you'd pay 3x the price then you have no room to be using the term sheep

You could get a computer with more power for less than $400.

What's a Macbook run? $1300 for the 13" pro? lol

I bet you can find a Windows laptop with pretty much the same specs for 1/3rd or very close.

The base 13" Pro starts a $1299, and comes with a dual core i5 clocked at 2.7 Ghz, 8 GB of LPDDR3 (clocked at 1866 mhz), and 128 GB of flash storage (PCIe based).

Certainly overpriced, I agree, but not exorbitantly so - particularly when you consider factors that are exogenous to the raw specs - specifically, overall build quality and OSX. OSX is a big reason that many people end up spending more on a Mac, especially for developers.

Just as an example, Dell's 13" XPS at $1299 is similarly spec'd to the 13" Pro - i5 around 2.7 Ghz, 8 GB of RAM, and a 128 GB SSD. While it has the added benefit of a slightly higher resolution display than the Pro, as well as a touch screen, it has slower RAM and uses M.2 SATA for its flash storage.

I'm mad at myself for even responding to this, and I'm sure you can find cheaper, but just try and find a x86 laptop with a 2560x1600 screen and an SSD for less than $1,000.

After looking for 10 minutes, this is what I found:

quote:

Samsung ATIV Book 9 930X2K 12.2? Notebook - Core M-5Y31 0.9 GHz - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD - Blue
$1,399.99

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Imperial Black Laptop Computer - NP930X2K-K02US
$1,199.99 from 5+ stores
Samsung · Samsung ATIV · ATIV Book · Solid State Drive · Windows OS · 12.2 inch · Intel GPU · 2.1 pound · 900 MHz CPU · 2560 x 1600

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Nt930x2k-ky4 Intel Core M 12.2" Wqxga Led Laptop
$1,550.00

Yoga 3 Pro - 80HE00FVUS - Light Silver: Web Special
$1,249.00

Yoga 3 Pro - 80HE00G1US - Clementine Orange: Web Special
$1,499.00

ASUS Zenbook UX303LA Signature Edition Laptop + Office 365 Home
$1,078.99

Dell XPS 15-8949sLV 15.6-inch Touchscreen Laptop
$1,978.99

Samsung ATIV Book NP940X3G-K04US 13.3" LED Intel i7 256 GB HDD, 8 GB, Windows 8.1 Laptop, Black
$1,950.09

ASUS ZenBook UX303LN DB71T - Core i7 2 GHz - 13.3? 3200 x 1800 - 12 GB RAM - Smoky Brown
$1,163.99

You get the point. Even then none of these could match the power/battery life combo of the Macbook Pro. Either they were woefully underpowered, like the 900 Mhz Broadwell M in the Samsung to get 12 hours of battery or matched with the same power like the Asus Zenbook at 2.7 Ghz which got only 8 hours of battery v the 13" Macbook Pros 10 hours.

Definitely hard to do. There's a lot of fragmentation in the non-Apple mobile computer market, and very few of them are doing exactly what Apple is doing. Plenty of laptops beating the hardware specs for a lot less money, but as you said, the battery life isn't up to par, and the resolution standards are all over the place. High-res seems to be generally reserved for that touch/tablet/flip/whatever hybrid that has been the trend in recent years, with a wide range of specs (including the low-end Core Ms that you seemed eager to point out). Same with SSDs. There's not much out there that seems to be competing with the Macbook Pro directly. Hard to find that exact or close-enough combination. Everyone's trying to cram a goddamn touch screen into every laptop from $250 to $2500. But a few vendors are starting to see the benefit of the way Apple configures their notebooks. The new Dell XPS laptops are headed in the right direction for sure. When you start to get into the higher end approaching-$1,000+ laptops, you either see ultrabooks focused on portability, or the desktop-replacement powerhouses.

I don't agree that there are laptops that match or beat any Macbook for a third of the price. But, spending an extra few minutes and recognizing that direct comparisons are difficult to find because Apple prioritizes hardware differently, I still think we can find something that does a little better than the somewhat disingenuous list you provided.

There's some growing healthy competition for sure, but the Macbook Pro's baseline price is still competitive. The closest Apples-to-Apples 360-degree comparison comes from the touch screen version of Dell's XPS 13, and you can see that it edges out the Macbook Pro in a few key areas for the same price. It's only when you go for raw computing power (sacrificing the portability, and maybe opting for a DIY SSD installation) that you find far less value in the Macbooks. But Apple's notebook customer base doesn't use that caliber of hardware anyway (and really, neither do the majority of Windows users).

Now, a separate discussion maybe worth having? The actual benefit of anything above 1080p on a 13-inch screen powered by a non-gaming laptop.

Uhh, all I did was Google search 2560x1600 laptop or better and picked out the ones with SSDs, which I think fits nicely with stouts criteria. Call Google disingenuous. Yes, there are dimensioning returns on resolution. But there is still a noticeable difference between 1600 and 1080, even at 13".

Is it possible to upgrade the SSD in the new MBP yourself or are you stuck with what you get from Apple?
