Henry 45-70 lever action info wanted

I'm developing a serious itch for one.

How big a boy are you?
Shot a 45-70 once, killed a doe. Hope to never shoot that gun again and I'm not a recoil sensitive person.
I'd rather a 35 whelen.

There are higher quality options than a Henry.

Quite average. Under 200 lbs.
But I do some handloading and would like to do a bit of light load shooting with cast bullets.
Only when I wanted to kill something big would I load up with full power cartridges

Pretty sure it doesnt fit the guidelines for primitive weapons either. So you'd have to use it during center fire season.
If that isn't a big deal, buy it and make your friends shoot full power loads.

No it's no big deal. I have a .50 cal front stuffer for primitive.
It would be fun to blast a few light loads, then slip in some monsters and hand it to a self appointed tough guy.

If .35 Whelen is available to use in your area then there is no reason to buy the 45-70.

You are getting off topic. The OP is looking at getting a lever action. It's not a "primitive weapon" anyway.

45-70 Henry is a nice rifle, but if i was getting one i'd would get the 357/38spl to shoot the same as my pistol.

Would buy from Henry again just based on their customer service. They were great fixing a problem with my .22

I think one day I would like to get something in .35 cal and the Whelen would definitely be a fine candidate.
It's just that right now I have a want for something in a big bore cartridge rifle, preferably lever.
Except for the 50 caliber black powder rifle, everything I have is 30 caliber or less. So right now I'm thinking 45, and then one day I could fill the middle with a 35.

I don't have the Henry, but I do have the Marlin 1895 in 45-70. I like shooting it despite the recoil, however the ammo runs about $2 a round.

I've got the 1895 (Cowboy) as well. First time I took it out, I shot the 325 grain Hornady Leverevolution round. I could only pull the trigger about 5x before I put the gun away. I saw stars after shooting that gun.
I later added a mold-to-fit Limbsaver and now the gun is much more pleasurable to shoot.
