Benardrick McKinney (ILB)
HT: 6'4" WT: 246LBS.
POSITION: ILB
SCHOOL: Mississippi St.
ARM LENGTH: 33"
HANDS: 9"

Overview

Started every game and led the team in tackles in 2014 and 2013. Selected first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American in 2014. Selected to Freshman All-SEC Team in 2012 and took a redshirt in 2011. Was starting quarterback for Rosa Fort High School (Miss.) his senior season, finishing with 15 touchdown passes and 7 rushing touchdowns. He also finished with 34 tackles and was the team's punter.

COMBINE STATS

40 YARD DASH: 4.66 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 16 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 40.5 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 121.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 7.21 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.27 SEC

Strengths

Tall, proportionally built inside linebacker with ability to play outside. Has thick, powerful legs. Good straight-line speed to chase. True take-on linebacker who can meet linemen head-on or beat them to the spot and leverage his gap with above average play strength. Scrapes and stalks while using length and powerful hands to keep himself free and clear of blockers. Steps into hole and fires into running back, finishing with wrap-up tackle. Able to run downfield in seam with tight ends. Aware of cutback lanes and rarely runs himself out of the play. Shows very good attention to assignment. Seems to have a nose for the play and is frequently in the mix. Has value on special teams and as a blitzer. Has adequate football intelligence.

Weaknesses

Plays high and is lacking suddenness. High center of gravity causes clunky change of direction in space. Foot quickness in tight quarters is below average and limiting. Instincts against run are there, but tends to fight his feet and marginal agility. Has trouble clearing the trash near his feet and labors against cut blocks, losing lateral momentum. Potential liability against the pass. Looks stiff when asked to cover in space and gives away too much separation to routes in his area in zone coverage.

Bottom Line

Productive, steady performer in the middle with above-average size and length for the position but below-average agility. McKinney plays within the scheme and finds himself near the play frequently. He plays with strength and has an ability to take on offensive linemen and get downhill to finish his tackles. McKinney looks like an above-average NFL inside linebacker who could become part of a really good defense. He lacks star-making talent, though.

Hey, I don't hate him, I just don't think he's what we need in an ILB at this moment.

Now if we were to pair him with a Kendricks or Dawson (double-dipping on LBs) I'd be all for that. They would essentially replace Ellerbe (Dawson) and Hawthorne (McKinney). Plus McKinney could possibly be a 2-in-1 player who could slide out to OLB opposite of Gallete sometimes, if we were to pass on one at 13 or 31.

I am glad the Saints are visiting with all the top LBs in this class and doing their due diligence tho.

So...we could possibly draft Bud Dupree and two of the five ILBs and have a young rebuilt linebacking core. Interesting...

I would actually be very ok with this. If they all 3 panned out to their potential...holy shite

Then grab an OG (Jackson/Matias) and best available CB/WR in the 3rd.

My dream scenario is we draft Gregory at 13, Kendricks at 31, then hope Perryman slips to the 3rd due to height/speed concerns and draft him there. That would be an awesome young LB corp, and we'd still have a 2nd and 3rd to address 2 other areas (OL, WR, DL, or CB).

I'm with Drank on McKinney. I just don't think he is the most mobile or versatile option.

What we have at LB'er is a steamy pile off sh!t. Not one quality NFL caliber starter.

I will take all improvements I can get and BM is one of many available.

Correct. I'm not saying he wouldn't be an upgrade. But his pass coverage is below average. There are other LBs in this draft who are just as good against the run and much better against the pass (Kendricks, Dawson and Anthony).

I'm not saying I would be upset if the Saints took McKinney because the others were already taken; I would be ok with that. I just don't think we should pass up the previous 3 I listed for him.

Agreed. I've been thinking a lot lately that I'd like to see them go with 2 ILBs in this draft. Why not? only negative I see is going all rookie in the LB spot. Probably means we won't have both starting, because it's difficult to trust 3 rookie LBs (figuring OLB as well) manning the front seven. That may wind up being too much to swallow for the coaches though.

I wouldn't mind that either, but I would prefer to use the 2nd rd pick on Stephone Anthony if he is still there.......Anthony and Kendricks in the middle would give us 2 young, rangy guys with good size in the middle with the ability cover TE's & RB's, and even flexibility to move ILB/OLB depending on packages and personnel....Then spend the 3rd round picks on OG/WR as mentioned earlier
