it's an interesting topic...the topic I speak of is targeting. Anglers that are specifically targetting Specks tend to limit out more than those that are not targetting specks.

That's borne out in numbers Blanchet supplied. According to LDWF research data, 66 percent of anglers catch five or fewer speckled trout per trip, 3 percent catch 10 per trip, 2 percent catch 15 per trip and 4 percent catch 25 per trip.

How was the info gathered if you don't mind me asking? Did they question only speck fisherman or all saltwater anglers? Guides included?

all saltwater anglers...guides included (through the newly created LA CREEL program)

Like I said earlier, targeting questions are really important in deciding the rates...but the problem (at it's heart) is a pride issue...anglers won't typically say they are targetting specifically for specks...especially if they don't catch any (but secretly may have been)

Problem is most people won't say they target Specks exclusively

I target Specks pretty exclusively most of the year

Do you mention that to the LDWF biologist on the dock that possibly surveys you?

at that point it's luck of the draw...if you go to private docks, those aren't sampled by LDWF biologists...it's assumed private docks have the same harvest rates as public docks

ETA: which is a huge assumption, but would require public content in order for sampling to occur on private docks

Huge and often inaccurate (unfortunately) assumption.

I've been questioned a couple of times at Bridgeside in Grand Isle and I think at the public launch at Cypremore Point.

Unfortunately, I think I'm part of the 66%.

What? Most people I know limit from late May to August, if conditions such as weather and tides are right

bullshite. I fish a lot and I know what I'm doing. I very rarely limit out and most people I know rarely do too.

I caught 75+ mmmaybe 4 times last spring/summer. Most trips were around 40-60 between 3 or 4 people.

Has the La WLF done any croaker studies or white trout studies (as Ihometiger suggested above). I would be interested in hearing those results.

i guess i'm the only guy on here that is old enough to remember NO limit, size or number, on specs. we used to load the ice chest with "cigar specs". so did everyone else. 25 fish per person is fine. the only ones that would want to see it reduced are the guides because it makes for a shorter workday for them and easier to say their customers caught their limit.

I remember those days well. Would come home with ice chests full of trout fillets. My family could eat fish for a year after one or two trips. Of course we made fewer trips also. Same number of fish taken a year as now, it just took fewer trips.

no stock assessments for those guys.

State does stock assessments on Redfish, Specks, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Southern Flounder, and of all things Striped Mullet
