1989-1990 LSU Basketball: What do you remember the problem being?

Watching the Shaq documentary got me thinking about that team.
They had great wins (UNLV, LMU), but never could really gell together consistently. Probably the most talented basketball team that never won anything.
What do you remember the problems were? Shaq said that there were too many guys who wanted to be "the man."
Was it Chris Jackson, who had to score all the time and could not play PG?
Was it Shaq, who didn't have the confidence yet?
That team could have used a Ricky Blanton type player to give leadership, but it seemed to be lacking.
That was a Calipari/Kentucky type team with all of the talent in the world.
What was the major problem? Of course, Georgia Tech absolutely catching fire in the 2nd round of the NCAAs had something to do with it too. That was a very good team.
I just read about that Georgia Tech game. Chris Jackson was hurt and had a horrible game. Fouled out with 2 and a half minutes to go and LSU leading 88-87. Lost 94-91. LSU had jumped to a 22-5 lead before losing it at the end.

Probably because our best 3 players were 2 freshmen and a sophmore in a completely different era of college basketball. Most players stayed until they were juniors which meant other teams had more experience than us. With the exception of the fab 5 most young teams didn't do great things.

Yeah, they were all young. Shaq had flashes of awesomeness, but didn't become consistently dominant until the following seasons. Also, that Georgia Tech team was their best ever at the time and they had 3 NBA 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder that were drafted from that team. Also, Dale was pretty good at blowing some big leads.

The documentary summed it up pretty good. Shaq was still green, no free throws, wanted Jackson and company to handle the O.

No seniors and only 2 or 3 juniors. ricky blanton graduated a year too early

didn't play enough defense... it isn't all about scoring. but man we had some guys who could literally light it up. not just CJ but Mo Williamson, Hansen, Harold Boudreaux, etc

Same as football now, coach was an incredible recruiter, ambassador and media darling but a retardo game coach. He might as well have been playing Mario brothers once game time started

Continually dumped it inside to Shaquille and if he didn't dunk, it didn't go in...we would get behind and then ask CJ to bring us back...

The team was young, at least the big names were, but they really lost to some teams, like Auburn that year, that had absolutely no business being anywhere close to us.
So when it came time to seeding we had to play Ga. Tech in the second round instead of a 6 or 7 see like we should have been.

They were too young and inexperienced. If CJ would have stayed for his junior year, and Stanley made his grades, they would have made a real run the next year.

Do you remember the game versus Mississippi State where Dale was mic'd up? Dale didn't draw up one game time situation play. Every TO was a motivational speech. The "group think" in this thread is pretty accurate.

They had a very poor head coach when it came to disciplining the team. He was a good recruiter, and he was an underrated in-game coach, but the lack of discipline caused them to be a huck-and-chuck team. Give that team to Rick Pitino, and they would have been a serious threat to win it all.

If I recall right, the entire starting five on that team had a combined one year of college basketball experience. Chris Jackson had played the previous year, but all four other starters were playing for the first time. Shaq was a true freshman and very unpolished offensively, with a penchant for getting in foul trouble (fouled out a lot even though the SEC went to the NBA-like 6-foul rule that year). Stanley Roberts wasn't a freshman, but was playing for the first time after sitting out due to grade problems. I think Maurice Williamson had also sat out for grade problems and was playing for the first time. I forget who the other starter was.
