Is it legal for dental hygienists to open a teeth cleaning practice?

Without having an actual dentist with a license on staff? Is this something that varies by state? By teeth cleaning practice, I literally simply mean a place to go for a deep cleaning and maybe some imaging, not a place to get dental surgery or fillings.

Everything is illegal so I'll say this is not allowed.

It's legal in Colorado. I don't think the business model is feasible though as hyg fees are generally a loss leader.

As for taking radiographs, I think they would need a radiologist to read and diagnose. Doesn't make sense to have the overhead for X-rays and have to pay someone to read them.

Why would anyone want to go to a separate place for cleanings that doesn't have a dentist there?

I'm not seeing the appeal.

If the hygienist is hot enough I'll pay extra for a happy ending.

The idea is to increase the availability of places to get cleanings done. Forcing people to go to dentists to get cleanings means higher costs and less options. More supply of cleaners=less cost.

I'm thinking about poor people.

Maybe because the dentist doesn't so shite?

If you take care of your teeth, a cleaning is all you need

how will lowering hyg fees make this model of independent hyg work?

Because the dentist only deals cavities, root canals, crowns, etc.

While this second statement is true, it only applies to maybe ten percent of my practice. Only half of the population even go to the dentist.

Some states require a dentist on the premises. I knew one who moonlighted on weekends, getting paid to sit in break room doing crosswords.

I'm talking about allowing places to open that don't have to deal with as much liability, and other costs associated with having a dentist on staff.

Not true. You could floss like crazy and brush all the time and still get an occasional cavity. Some people are just more predisposed to dental decay than others.

Part of my dental cleaning is after the hygienist is done, my dentist goes over my X-rays with me(if it's time for them). Shows me areas that might be a concern later on, etc. If I don't have X-rays he still comes over to chat with me briefly and make sure I'm not having any dental issues(tooth pain, etc).

Maybe you just have bad dentist?

Yea true. Like OP says, it's expensive and not everyone can afford it. Of course, a lot of people are just lazy and won't go anyways, but a cheaper option wouldn't hurt

I don't have a bad dentist. I just don't have bad teeth. Someone with healthy teeth doesn't really need a dentist.

Sadly I have inherited poor weak teeth from my family. Yay genetics! So I really have to be on top of my dental care.

Meanwhile my husband never goes, not even cleanings, and has never had a cavity in his life.
