Spring is finally here and it brings yet another chance at all Louisiana homebrewers to try and plant hops in a climate that isn't recommended...

I tried a few years ago and got a really good plant going before my roommates dog got into it...

This year I don't have that problem and I am really excited to try and get some going. I bought 3 cascade rhizomes and I am going to plant them along my back fence. I know I won't get a huge (if any) harvest this year, but they look nice and smell awesome (if you are into hops) so I think it could be cool foliage along the back of my yard.

Plans are to string them up to a tree with a hanging branch probably about 14 feet above the ground. That should give them enough room to grow up it.

Anyone have success growing hops in Louisiana?

I might look into this as well

I am redoing my front flower beds as we speak. Just dropped $700.00 on 6 plants that will be the main center pieces. Then next Monday I will spend around $300.00 on my filler plants

I did it last year and had a really good turnout by early summer. It was crazy. Planted cascade, citra, and a couple others. Planted each in a half barrel and ran a 16ft 2x4 on the backside with a small trelace (spelling?). Ran strings from top of barrel to top of 2x4. Had all four rhizomes watered by a drip hose on a timer. Little upkeep and lots of hops. Found that cascade and citra grew the best.

Post some pics once they start growing.

I find hops to be a very attractive plant, especially if you want a high growing vine. These things can get up to almost 20 feet if allowed... The added bonus is obviously trying to get hops from them, but I'm just looking forward to starting a garden that could eventually move to other herbs as well.

I absolutely will. I'll probably just update this thread so if others are growing make sure to post your own setups.

My cascade from last year came back up a couple weeks ago. Growing fast. I am going to plant some tomatos and a sativa plant in the same space.

How did you get citra? I thought they were proprietary.

I'm in Dallas so not nearly as humid but our temps get higher. They do pretty well although I harvest in early to mid summer. Not sure if they produce earlier because of the heat.

Yesterday afternoon I started working on my planter box. I put down some 6x6 beams and dug out the grass. I'm getting some nutrient rich soil at lunch today and getting to work.

My plan is to put a 16 foot pole up attached to my fence with twine dropping down to the three plants. Looking at different options I think I am going to use a extended pool cleaning pole. Can get one for under $30 and will be retractable.

I had great success with Chinook and moderate success with Zeus last year.

The Zeus are already growing like crazy this year, the Chinook are coming around slowly.

So I still have a little more work to do, but I did get a lot accomplished yesterday... I added some nutrient rich soil (still need some topsoil to fill up planter box) and strung up my hop leads... It's starting to come together! Hops go into the ground Monday afternoon.

I had to get my clothesline out yesterday and string them up... they are really taking off this year. I just have a small backyard behind my condo so I rigged a pulley-system up with the lines going through eyelets I clamped to the second floor window-sill.

5 dollars of PVC pipe and 3 dollars of spray paint.

I ran the twine through the pvc pipe and tied it down, however I can drop the twine so I could harvest easier.

I am really excited to see how it works.

Update for everyone?

Of my three plants 1 has exceeded the other two for sure. This one is almost at 7 feet tall now. The other two are at about 2 feet and 1 foot tall.
