LSU MBA with work experience salary question

For those with knowledge of LSU's MBA program, what are some rough starting salaries for general management focused graduates with prior work experience (>5 years)?

I understand from my own time at LSU in undergrad and from friends and family still in the area that the program is respected, but that the lack of work experience skews salary figures.

After 4 years as a combat arms officer in the Marines and now working in the NCR seeing sausage get made, a return home may be in the works. With getting back to Louisiana a priority LSU is naturally a top choice. Any input to this very open ended question is appreciated.

LSU Career Services in the Business School should be able to provide you the best information. It's going to vary pretty widely depending upon the industry/field you're looking into.

Agreed. When I was in the program, we had very few students that had prior work experience. I know that they've been working to change that mix, though.

The majority of the current class has very minimal work experience. Salary will vary widely on field and undergrad degree.

Have you considered the MBA program at Tulane (or McCombs at UT)? They both have better brands in the market place. You will have a strong application with your military background.

There's 4 different MBA routes, all the same degree.

1) Full Time: Regular undergraduate schedule. Mostly recent graduates from LSU
2) Professional: Night classes for working individuals. Median age is 28 so about 5-6 years working experience is common.
3) Executive: Mainly for higher-ups in a company. Probably 20+ years experience on average.
4) Online: For people who started MBA, but has moved for some reason and wanted to finish. You can start and finish with the online program, but you lose the networking experience.

Again, all result in the same MBA Degree.

Here are the average salaries, but as you can see, it just states LSU MBA and doesn't specify the route that individual took to get that degree. MBA avg: $72,750

Coming from a recent graduate of the full time MBA program at LSU, you can expect to make from 50K-70K depending on your undergrad degree. Most likely around 60K.

Add in work experience and factor in field and those numbers change a lot.

That was really at the heart of my question. I've emailed LSU to hopefully dig into the data a little more.

The issue with their numbers to me as an outsider (now 6 years out of LA and undergrad) is the diversity of their graduates. They difference in salary of a student with no work experience vs someone with military experience vs someone with experience in the industry they are hired back into could vary wildly.

As far as UT/Tulane/out of states I am certainly planning on applying, but a prime motivator for getting out of the USMC is returning home. From all that I have found out through those I have talked to an LSU MBA will find you and "keep you" in LA, for better or worse.

At least through GI Bill and yellow ribbon programs the above programs will be cheap if not free, and should hopefully pair well with my existing experience in management, requirements/acquisitions, and time in the "corporate" part of a service HQ.

Yes, those numbers are from a survey that LSU send to recent graduates. They ask for what major you had, who your current/future employer is, and how much you make.

If I had to guess, Executive MBA's who filled out the survey would skew the average upward along with the professional MBA's which are a lot of engineers with 7 or 8 years of experience working for Shell/Exxon/etc.

I make slightly more than 50k now after being out of college for 2yrs. No way could I justify going back for my MBA unless I knew I'd jump up to 70k.

IMO, a lot of it has to do with what your undergrad degree is in and what type of experience you bring to the table.

Interesting to hear then.

Thanks to the above posters though; it appears from most of the feedback that the full time program is less helpful for military transitions relative to some other programs which put a premium on prior work experience.

I went to McCombs at UT with a dozen former military guys. All but one had already transitioned to a civilian job and most had several years exeperience. I'd possibly consider getting a civilian job first, getting a couple years experience then go to school.

My one friend that came straight from the military sounds like you, they let him move to recruiting while he did his MBA and he got a job at Target running one of their stores after school.

One of my classmates and good friends was a Marine who had been an officer. Id say thats incredible work experience and paired with a MBA from anywhere youd be hard to compete with in the job market.

barry, how did you decide on McCombs, and did you do full time?

Did my MBA at a lower tier school, not LSU. I can say that what you do after you complete the MBA matters. I mean presentation and accomplishments. Keep learning and using what you learned.

It was the best MBA program within 700 miles of Houston. I could do the professional program in Houston and I really loved the cutlure and the proffesors. It also gave me another avenue to hate TAMU

This is highly speculative.

So many factors.

1st, and most important, previous work experience.
2nd, industry.

Generally, most of your average school MBA's will find a job that is on a path.

Where I work, those with MBA's that the company sees value in puts them on a path. You wont start off at the top, unless you go ivy, but you can get to the top.

I have found that a large number of organizations operate like this.

I agree. An MBA raises your ceiling not necessarily your floor.
