Yeah the rig blew and that pissed me off. Yeah the beaches had oil and that pissed me off. And after a while I thought it was cleaned up and stuck my head in the sand and went along thinking--"hey--the spill is not that big a deal--it will correct itself"

If I want someone to tell me how to think, I'll ask my wife!

I was running out the other day and I may or may not have hit one with my lower unit, totally unintentional. I'm pretty sure there was blood in my wake. They usually move out of the way!

A freezer full is a gross exaggeration and 3 small ones had shite to do with BP

Tar balls on the beach aren't really all that uncommon, even without an accident like BP.
I know they were washing up at least 40 years ago.

Like said before, how much do they have to pay before you will be satisfied? For the most part and in the grand scheme of things the GOM has returned to its previous state.
What is your conclusion based on?
And btw, BP continues to fight the economic settlement claims tooth and nail.

My posts say nothing about compensation. I want the fricking coast to return back to normal.

Its about that time of year again when pulling back at the launch, you have the grad students and people taking surveys asking if the BP spill made an impact in where I choose to fish.

And I will say "no" as long as the year goes the way it's going so far.
now if I'm in GI and I have a shite trip and the reports have been horrible, I might say something else.

I can take you to spots in fourchon, grand isle, Elmer's, grand terre, east grand terre, all over north barataria where there is still oil.
It's there and in some instances the STR - Shoreline Treatment Reccomendation from the biologists, scientists, and cleanup experts is to do nothing, leaving in place and continue monitoring.
Other places - with tar mats specifically are to be dug up and removed. I know/knew exactly where there are offshore mats but unfortunately the protocol and clean up regulations - regulations dictated by the USCG - did not allow for removal in the surf zone, certain areas etc. the cleanup can only be performed with authorized activities, you break those rules and USCG could come down on you hard and potentially prosecute. So we all followed the rules.
I did some psuedo snorkel SCAT (shoreline cleanup assessment team), I did regular SCAT, beach surveys, airboat surveys, boat surveys, onsite inspection etc for over 2 years.
In fact I have friends still cleaning up oil and BP has created a jobs program for South LA for the rest of my life.

Good post. To be fair though the ecosystem has done a pretty good job overall getting rid of the oil in a lot of spots
Posted on 4/1/15 at 9:56 am to maisweh
I worked with one of the Coast and Environment Professors who was tracking the biodegradation of the oil (although I was on a different project). This past summer, I remember them going out on a trip to the Bay Jimmy area and finding loads of oil still in the soil that hadn't biodegraded. Some heavy hydrocarbons in the oil are not the favorite food of the oil-eating bacteria, and since they also can't evaporate, they just stay there.

I ate a tripletail from under an offshore mat

I have a colleague doing the same thing in the same area
