Moulin Rouge and A Knight's Tale both came out in 2001 and did this.

I'm sure it was done before that, though.

The music wasn't a part of the movie. In Knights Tale, they are doing the clap to We Will Rock You, and Ledger and hot tits are dancing to Golden Years by David Bowie.

In 1971 McCabe & Mrs. Miller was a Western that had a Leonard Cohen soundtrack. It's a melancholy movie and his music makes it more that way. Don't know if you can put a label of modern on Cohen though.
