Did this happen before "Grease?"

Well Grease was a play in 1971 so I wouldn't put Grease in that category. The music was written to sound like music from the period.

Great Gatsby is what recently comes to mind, but I'm sure there's a plethora of examples.

That's the first one that pops in my head, but I'm sure there's earlier examples.

The Highlander basically had an 80's score running throughout all of it. Not sure if that counts.

I actually thought Grease did a really good job blended a 50's vibe into their music. A lot of the songs had a doo wop or Motown feel to them.

Great one. That was full of 80's synthesized music.

What a great movie also.

No matter how many times I see it, I always lose it whenever the solo horn player puts his horn down at the end of the "We Will Rock You" guitar solo like, "yeah...that was me, sorry".

did the Leo version of romeo and juliet do this? i don't remember. i guess the whole movie did this so it doesn't really count.

It doesn't because the majority of the film takes place in the 80s.

Yeah that was the first time I heard this done. I thought it was kind of cool. A Knight's Tale did it 5 years earlier though; however, I am sure it wasn't the first instance.

Yeah, the soundtrack included Radiohead, The Cardigans, and Desiree.
