Is there one?

Searching salary.com, but it's hard to know if it matches what you're looking for

I feel asking people in your network across various companies produces a more accurate result than any on-line service. I was lucky and spent years in audit across various size institutions where I could review compensation for my industry.

Why do companies frown on employees talking about salary?

Because it's an HR nightmare and takes away their bargaining power.

Because there are usually a few very overpaid people in each division. This is usually due to either over hiring or aggressive brown nosing, but when a good employee finds out that the slug in be group makes more than they do, thy are going to be pissed and want a big raise.

That and when someone is there for 5 years and suddenly the new hire is making as much or more than they are.

In most cases the best way to get the raises you want is to switch jobs.

Yup.

I had a prof in grad school who preached that companies should post the salaries of all employees. In a free market world this is a good idea.... I mean we all know what celebrities and athletes make.

but we all live in the "real world".

Where I work we know salary bands. So for every position we sort of know what you could make...it's a fairly large spread though. Generally around 20k.

our salary bands are closer to 100k. Its surreal.

when I started managing people, I discovered that I was the lowest paid person on the team. By a lot, yet I was at a more senior level. really pissed me off. the company brought me up to the mid point of my band, but still less than 3 ppl working for me. I eventually quit over that and another HR related matter.

My boss told me I make more than he does.

Hawkeye, when you were talking about tech sales jobs in another thread which companies were you talking about that are hiring?

Sorry to derail the thread topic...but I was just curious and thought I would ask.

The idealized "free market" is one where by definition nobody has an information advantage to start with. It wouldn't be an idea (good or bad), it would be what already is.

As to whether it would be a good idea, it depends on who you're talking about. For example, the employer is a market participant too and has an obvious incentive to keep such stuff on the DL.
