I'm graduating in a month (EE) and have had no luck finding any jobs in New Orleans. Three of my graduating classmates have been laid off from internships, and everyone is feeling nervous

Because they are not the best at what they do and didn't believe in themselves.

YOU need to decide if you are going to be a success or not in your industry. If you think things are great and work your arse off they will be great, it really is that easy.

That's midtown. I can see my office from my balcony.

I almost went with the loft, but I heard that complex is very loud. I'm at city place midtown

Yeah, I'm not familiar with Houston, so I have no idea what Uptown/Downtown/Midtown is. If I end up getting a job in that area, I'll make sure to get living arrangement advice from you + make you my best friend whether you want to or not.

Regardless of where it is, it looks like it's walking distance to a lot of cool places, and it has great views in addition to being huge. All of that for $317k is insane.

Found the exact place I was thinking of:
LINK /

But this one is just as badass:
LINK /

Seriously, either of those places in NOLA would cost 3x as much.

Really bad time to go into tech sales though

Now I cringe at every bit of bad news I have to give the customer.

You never give bad news, you always frame it as great news. Say you have a month delay or something...you don't say "oh I am so sorry we are late on our delivery", instead you say "you guys got SO lucky! We were about to ship our original tech but we upgraded before we did so now you are getting the new stuff and only have to wait a month to get it instead of having to buy outdated tech and then buy the new stuff in a year!". Even if it is complete BS it doesn't matter as long as you sell it. Sell it to your contact and they will sell it to their company. This is true for any profession these days.

We actually looked at that place when we moved here. My wife didn't like it and we ended up renting since we didn't know the area. Then my college friends moved across the street.

You want to be in that area if you move here. It's the opposite direction of traffic too

I know that I don't have a shot at the positions asking for 5 years experience, but I do anyway.

I have been doing the same thing. I have a good GPA, internship, and do well in interviews, and we are in the same boat.

I don't fit any of those categories. Like I mentioned before, my GPA would be much better if I'd transferred over 6 months later, but I'll end up with a ~2.8 instead of the ~3.2 that I deserve. Never could get an internship. Thought I did adequately in interviews, but they haven't helped me get a position, so I'm assuming that I'm not good enough. We're not in the same boat. You're with Kathy Bates in the lifeboat and I'm with the filthy dagos and Leo Dicaprio going down with the ship.

Every time I happen to read one of your posts (not often), it's about you crushing interviews and having multiple badass jobs lined up.

Not trying to sound like an arse, and congrats on the job offers, but damn. Really flirting with that confident/cocky line.

Since we have a lot of engineers giving input, I'd like to ask a question I've been stressing out over. First of all I'm a sophomore ME major at tech, but exactly how important is GPA? everyone just kind of says the degree is what matter the most and get out, but I'm at a 2.85 and always get 2.67-3.0 each quarter. Luckily I have pretty much the bare minimum hours for the level of classes I'm in, but in return I schedule dead last and just get stuck with what teachers are left (there's a reason their classes fill up last). I always get stuck with the hardest teachers. What are things like for MEs with a lower GPA? And thanks in advance!

If you can pull off 3-6 months of internship hours, you'll be fine. If not, you may be worse off than I am (similar GPA, but a result of a ~2.0 GPA from 2001-2005 + a 3.2GPA from the past 3 years).

Others may give you better advice, but if I were in your position, I would offer any legit company in your field to work for free if you can afford it. I know that I couldn't get any EE internships, but those paid $20+ an hour. I probably could have my pick of the litter if I'd have worked for nothing. If I'd have done that, I'd have plenty more options as a graduate.

Thanks, I'm just in a tough situation when for example my thermodynamics class had a 55 average and the other one had a 82, but that's just life. And my dad is an EE, so at least I have connections that could help me get that internship in a plant.

nd it sounds really stupid coming from someone that has access to NOLA family/friends as a priority, but I'd honestly rather live and work in a city that I like in the NE/NW than a city I hate a 3 hour drive from NOLA. I'll start applying to jobs in Jackson and Birmingham if I'm desperate, but I'd rather work in Portland ME, Dallas/Houston, Charleston, or Savannah even though they aren't within a Friday afternoon's drive away.

As others have mentioned, location should absolutely be secondary, unless you have something really pressing with your immediate family IMO.

The way I look at it GPA is important for getting interviews, once you get the interview you can impress them there and show them that your GPA doesn't actually reflect your abilities. Since you are a sophomore, you should focus heavily on doing whatever you can to get internships the next two summers. Shouldn't matter the location or pay.

Thermo is supposedly the worst civil/mechanical class by far. Don't fret. The average in my Probs and Emag classes were in the upper 50's. You'll pass so long as you're not getting grades well below the average.
