No internships is going to hurt you. Do you have any relevant work experience?

I did lower level (1-25 ton) HVAC estimating for a year, but that would be more ME than EE. I've also been learning Autocad Electrical, which isn't part of the EE curriculum and none of the other ~12 fellow graduates that I would be competing against have any experience in CAD. That's just learning some of the ins and outs of the program, though, not hardcore experience. I'm tempted to, after graduation, paying a PE to spend 4-5 hours to go through some real life design situations with it to hopefully give me a leg up.

I'm willing to move away for a few years if I have to, but I really need to come back. I've even looked into jobs in Alaska and Saudi Arabia. But my family and friends are very important to me.

This.

I left BR for the east coast. Moved around the east coast for a while. Worked with a lot of companies located in the northeast. Learned a lot about how my particular field and how the engineering world turns.

Now, just this year, I'm back down South close to where I grew up. I had a lot of good offers on the table and even got to leverage salary, vacation, etc. during the negotions.

In short, leaving BR ended up being a very good decision for me. And I HATE cold weather and the North.

doesn't matter...just point out why the internship makes you an ideal candidate for whatever job you are applying for at the time...that is the game, so play it...

honestly, it sounds like you are spending a lot of time coming up with reasons why you can't get a job...devote that energy to getting one instead...

I regret not taking a job in New York leaving college.

Just took a new job still in Houston. Hoping to get to NYC in 3 years

I'm pretty sure Lanier and associates is hiring. They're very busy in new otleans and Beaumont. You may have to do a lil CM work to get your foot in the door.

It's not what I want, but your career path is probably what I'll be doing. Yesterday, I applied to a few jobs in Portland, Maine (looks like an awesome city). I wouldn't mind being able to easily hit up the NE's awesome transportation system and get to spend some time in NYC, Boston, DC, and Philly. I'm just not willing to make a permanent move.

Not an engineer, but I just recently relocated to Houston. Best decision I've ever made. Hope to get to Denver for a few years before settling down for good.

I've had my eye on them. Great location too as I'd be down for finding a home uptown that I could walk to work from. I was going to wait until after the FE (taking it in 3 weeks) before I applied, though.

ETA: And honestly, if I end up getting $1000-$3000 in graduation gifts, I would be down to work for free for a summer if I knew it could get me a good job in NOLA doing what I want to do (actual design, not glorified technician work).

I am graduating in a month (chemical). Had a job lined up out in that area that I had accepted in early December. I found out last week that they won't be able to hire me due to them having to do some laying off. So yea doom and gloom sounds fitting.

I have a connection VERY high up at Entergy and is hasn't helped. Kind of wish he worked at a smaller company, but I want to get a job on my own merits, and if Entergy doesn't want me, then frick them.

I've applied to 30+ positions over the past month or two. I've decided to chill out on that so that I can put EIT, FE passed, and graduate on my resume rather than "graduating in May 2015." It may be the wrong decision, but it's not a pussy/ill-conceived decision.

I'm working on the other end of the spectrum than you guys. I am in project management for a custom fabricator of oil refinery pressure vessels. We have so much work right now we're having to turn quotes down. It seems a lot of these refineries are using this downtime to upgrade a lot of their aging cat crackers/coolers/absorbers and what not.

Depends on the field work. I have no problem with it in general, but I am committed to getting my PE license in 4 years.

Exactly I had to intern in Auburn Hills, MI (Chrysler) and Spring Hill, TN (Electrolux).
